I have read the tips about using sponges to soak up liquid dish soap and then dry the sponges, so they can be cut up and used to clean sippy cups, etc. So I was wondering if the same concept could be used for laundry soap? Could I just throw the sponge with the dried laundry soap in with the wash? Am I crazy to think this might work?

Hmm I think it could work. But I think it might be easier to get some snack sized ziploc bags, buy some powder detergent and measure one load each in to each baggie then put all the individual baggies in a larger ziploc bag. Them all you have to do when you go to the laundry is take the individual bags of detergent you need . This is what I did last year.

Not sure if that would work, and the sponge might damage the clothes?? Not sure, but you can also just buy Dropps. They are laundry pods-kinda like those automatic dishwasher gel packs. Each one is 1 load-and they work GREAT!! I've used them for our trips before and I just pack dryer sheets. But make sure you pack them in a hard tupperware type thing so they don't burst.

:thumbsup2

I used the small 3 oz. bottles and labeled them..I brought enough for the 2 loads I knew I would do..plus, fabric softner...I placed a roll of quarters in the baggie as well...while the kids swam,I did laundry...

I think the sponge my fall apart in the wash. That would be a mess. I agree with others just to get some sample sizes.

I started a thread about travel size detergent a while ago, and got some great suggestions.

One of the ideas was to take a premeasured amount of detergent, and pour it into a washcloth, soaking the washcloth. Place the washcloth in a ziploc, and throw the washcloth (minus the ziploc) in with your dirty clothes to do a load of laundry.

HTH!

I go to our Walmart and buy a small box of powder..measure it out into zip lock baggies then put them into a bigger zip lock with dryer sheets and quarters:thumbsup2

That way we don't have to worry about liquid spilling, plus we always just bring one carry on per person so we don't have to deal with the liquid rule.

I like the washclothe idea. I sign up for the free soap sample that are posted on the Freebie Thread on the Budget board. Then I wrap my samples in the Press and Seal wrap and place them in a zip lock bag along with some dryer sheets.

I start "ordering" free samples about 4 months before my trip (they can take 8 weeks to arrive). Then I put those into a plastic container to keep them from exploding.

This is exactly what I do - measure out the correct amount of powdered detergent for each sandwich-sized ziploc. No need to soak a sponge in liquid detergent, then go through all of the other stuff. I'd worry that the detergent wouldn't dissolve in the washing machine, and my clothes wouldn't get clean.

I think the advantage of using the sponges with dried dish soap on them is to be able to use the sponge to scrub your dishes -- you wouldn't need a sponge to clean your clothes! All you need is the detergent!
