Are the resort beaches open to anyone staying onsite like the marinas, or just to guests staying at that resort? I'll admit I did not do an extensive search for this question, just perused the FAQ's for some resorts.
TIA,
Megrod74, to add onto what Ducklite stated, I want to make sure that you realize that no swimming is allowed in the lakes of WDW: click here to see the warning sign at the GF. I've heard all sorts of reasons for the "no swmming," but the constant thread seems to be the bacteria levels in the lakes.
Have a great time at PO-R. I just love PO-FQ (I haven't tried Riverside yet).
Interesting! Seems a little strange to have "beaches" where you can't go in the water. May as well stay at the pool. Thanks for your answers
I just want to check out the beaches so that's good that they won't be looking for room keys.
I've seen a lot of speculation as to why there isn't swimming allowed in the lakes at Disney.
One is contamination from the boats or something. I don't know about this.
There is a lot of problems with amoebas (sp?) in the lakes in Florida. If they penetrate your nasal passage or other areas of your body you can become very sick and even die. There were a couple of deaths last summer. The media articles at the time suggested not swimming in the lakes in Florida at all. I thought it also said they were worse during the summer months.
Anyway, maybe this is one reason why.
I thought it was strange that they have a triathlon at Disney every year that takes off from the Contemporary and I believe the swim is in Bay Lake but maybe they require nose plugs to participate.
GrinningGhost you are not hallucinating. Year ago they did allow swimming in the lake. However, they haven't for a while now. I agree with floridafam that it is a number of reasons.
There is increase watercraft use, the amebas that can illness, the cost of life guards, and alligators. I think when Disney adds up all these factors, it is less of a liability to just say that swimming is not allowed.
A 12 yr old boy was attacked and killed by an alligator last week near Leesburg.
The officilas from Florida said that if there is a hole in Florida that has water in it you can pretty much guarantee that there is an alligator in it.
It was really sad to read about that boy. He was just playing with some friends in the water and they spotted alligators and told him to get out. He wouldn't.
Sad
I've heard about the alligator over at BCV but has anyone seen one near Bay Lake?

I also read that this boy and his friends had seen alligators all morning at the marina but would hop out when they got too close to them. They played this little game for a couple of hours. When it happened, the boys hollared for this boy to get out and he refused. I guess he thought he was playing chicken. What were these kids thinking?
I was at the Poly in Dec 2001 and was surprised there was no swimming at the beach. I swam in the water there back in 1989.
Stayed at CBR many times since 1991. There was originally a small beach by port royale you could go in but not in recent years.
I did read somewhere (website) recently that you could wade in
the beach at WL.
After reading bout the amoeba problem - think i will pass on even
that with my 6 yr old granddaughter with me.
I thought there was a beach at River Country that you could swim in but maybe not.
The closest thing to a beach like experience might be at the beach and yacht club - the mini water park has a sandy beach like area. My GD loved it. That was Dec 2001
