I'm thinking of getting a Concentrated Room Spray from Bath and Body Works for my upcoming trip, to generally freshen up the room, and well ... keep in the bathroom. Any seasoned flyers out there know whether this 1.5 oz aerosol can will be ok packed away in my luggage? I can put it in my checked bag.

Along the same lines, what do you use to freshen up the room?

Yes, it will be fine in your checked luggage...from a security standpoint. I would put it in a ziploc though....pressure changes can do baaadd baaaddd things. :)

Even though it is within the guidelines (under 3 oz) I would check it. No reason to take a chance on getting delayed for any reason.

According to the tsa website, aerosols are not permitted, except for personal care or toiletries. I don't think air freshener would fall into that.

DebbieB is right - it does not qualify as a personal care item. Would it make it through in your luggage without being caught? Probably. Would it make it through without leaking. Maybe...probably. You'd have to decide if you want to willingly break the rule.

I flew to Oregon with it in my checked luggage and it was fine. We even had our luggage gone through and it survived. I would consider it a personal care item. Maybe they do as well. Kinda subjective if you ask me. I also use an aerosol deodorant which comes in a much larger can and that was fine as well.

As has been pointed out, while any aerosol may be "fine" in checked luggage--as far as getting through and not exploding--only personal care items are technically allowed in checked luggage. What an individual passenger may "consider" to be a personal care item is pretty much irrelevant as the TSA definition is limited to aerosols that would be applied to a person's body--such as hairspray or deodorant--not disinfectants, scented air sprays or cleaning products.

So, packing the room spray does violate policy and if your checked bag is searched and the spray is found it may be removed.

What I meant by "fine" is that they did not remove it after having our luggage searched. Obviously they saw no problem with it during the thorough check of our baggage. As I stated they may see it as a personal care item as I do. Of course it can be removed and taken just as any other item can. Our family has had a camera taken even though there is nothing in the guidelines against them.;)

Technically, they are not permitted by the TSA. Their definition of "personal care item" (found further within the TSA website) is that it must be something you spray on your body or your hair. Which one doesn't do with aerosol room spray!

Of course, we all know how well TSA follows its own rules! In other words, I am totally not doubting rusty4, just providing the actual rule.

I would put it in my checked bags inside of a ziploc in case it leaks. The TSA will make you throw it away if they find it, plus you really have no need for it on the plane.
