I am helping my mother and sister plan a trip to WDW. My sister has CP and uses a wheelchair or ECV almost all of the time. She can transfer, but cannot walk. My mother is a large person with a debilitating back injury, she can walk short distances such as around a hotel room, but cannot stand for any length of time or walk any distance. She will also be using an ECV. They want to stay in a WDW resort and will be travelling with two friends. They are trying to decide whether they should all try to stay in one room or get two connecting rooms. I tried to call WDW's special reservations number, but they would not make any suggestions as to which resort would be best accept to say that once we have chosen a resort we can make special requests. It sounds like many of the accesible rooms only have a king bed, are there any with two queens? I would appreciate any advice on which resorts may be the most convenient, and are there any that will accomodate four adults and two ECVs. Cost is also a concern, they cannot afford any type of suite or villa. My husband and I have been to WDW many times, but we always stay in our camper at Fort Wilderness, so we aren't familiar with rooms in any of the resorts. This is probably the only chance my mom and sister will ever have to go to WDW, so I want to help them plan as much as possible for a trouble free trip. Also, does anyone know if the monorail is accesible in the Contemporary? I only remember a long escalator to get to it. Thanks.

Hi and :welcome: to both DisBoards and disABILITIES!

I moved this thread from the disABILITIES Community Board as it is directly related to WDW and better suited here.

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information, including where people rent ECVs.

I would suggest you glance through the FAQ and then browse some of the threads in this forum. I think you will find a lot of answers to your questions.

One major question is an accessible room actually required? This would be one with a walk-in shower and not a tub.

And there is an elevator to the monorail platform at the Contemporary, it is very close to the escalators to the platform.

Thanks for your patience, I've never used a forum before. They will need a walk-in or roll-in shower, neither my mother nor sister can step over a tub and they cannot stand up to take a shower, they use a walk-in shower with a seat at home. It sounds like most of the resorts have king beds in their accesible rooms, which would make it necessary for them to get two rooms to accomodate everyone. The only places that I have been able to find that may have two queens and an accesible shower are the Polynesian and maybe the Contemporary. Thanks.

We have stayed at the Poly. many times with one person in a WC & 3 others in the room. The accessible rooms with the roll-in showers are in the Rapa Nui bldg & are great! Two queen beds, a single daybed, & lots of room. This bldg. is located in between the Great Ceremonial House (Lobby, rest. bldg) and the walkway to the TTC, Ferry to MK & Monorail. You can also take the monorail from the Lobby.

I think it is the best location for first timers to WDW who use ECV/WC. It has the easiest access to all of the different types of Disney transportation. It is also a very nice resort & don't know if they're interested but it also has a zero entry pool.

There is a thread on the resorts board by Tikiman that has loads of info on the Polynesian. Good Luck!

In a deluxe, it may be possible with a little reaarangement to plug in two ecv's, but even there, I think it will be a little tight with two buggy's and 4 adults. One solution that i've used is to leave one of them plugged in in the hall (but do take the key!)

1 king takes up less room than 2 queens giving you more maneuvering space - but it's big enough so that two people can still sleep quite a ways apart. I would definitely want two rooms for 4 people and two ecv's at a moderate or budget resort - it's simply too small, in my view.

In your situation my preferred room would be at the Polynesian or the Beach club because from each you can access two parks without taking a bus.
