Resolution if you have had something stolen from your room?

OK FOLKS!

Safetymom and I have pointed the above out SEVERAL times. People have told us we were "alarmist" and that you can just leave your laptop out with no problem.

I can vouch for your warnings on this one Carol, I was one of those dunder heads that didn't really store my valuables when I was on vacation. What makes it worse I am a business traveler so I'm in hotels at least 2-3X's a week. Luckily I've never had any thing stolen but I did buy the computer cable right after one of your warnings.
Hotel thefts happen every where from Motel 6 to the 4 seasons. Disney is no exception.

Also how many of you back up your hard drives before you travel? You may lose your laptop and could you recreate all the files you had on the laptop?

For personal use that may not be much of an issue but for a business person, writer, student who lost that information how hard would it be to recreate all those files?

A little prevention is always a good thing.

AKA 'the great Paris harddrive crash of 2006'!

I travel with a portable hard drive - very small; purchased on sale for about $79. It holds the entire contents of my harddrive plus all of my iTunes movies etc which won't fit on my hard drive

The computer was in plain sight, so we won't make that mistake again. Thanks for all of the info on the cable lock -- I had never heard of such a thing!

Luckily we only use the laptop infrequently, so we didn't lose very much.

What's frustrating me more than anything is the lack of communication. We were told by security and the hotel manager that the claims dept would be getting back to us within 10 days, but any communication that we have had has been us trying to contact them, and not reaching anyone who seems to know much about the status of the claim. The letter that we received telling us that they had received our claim didn't even have a phone # or a real address (just a PO Box) and was signed with a scribble (and no name was typed underneath).

However, just today my DH did speak with someone who has reviewed the file and she said that the investigation is ongoing. They were able to determine the # of times that our room was opened with employee keys and apparently they have discovered that there was more activity in our room than there should have been. Also, I believe that mousekeeping was able to confirm the existence of the computer. I do realize that unfortunately people do fake claims, which makes it that much harder when there is a legitimate loss. It does appear that the claims person at least does believe that a theft did occur.

She also told my husband that they had left a few messages for us to call them but our message light was never lit (and we checked it regularly). She said that it is not unusual for the message system to not work properly! Obviously, this is annoying because perhaps some things could have been resolved before we came back home.

I'll keep you posted.

Just another note- if you pay your entire ressie with your credit card, some credit card companies offer insurance for loss during your trip. I had left some costly items in our nightstand drawer and we forgot to check it before we left the resort. My fault entirely. When I called resort lost and found, surprise....the items were not found. I was transferred to claims and asked them to send a form noting the lost items and will now file a claim with my signature Visa to be reimbursed. I don't blame Disney or a housekeeper. I should've checked the entire room before we left. These items could easily have been taken by the next guest or perhaps the items were thrown out by the housekeeper who didn't take the time to notice what was tossed ( paper media only in my case). Next time I'll be wise and safe...and use the safe!---Kathy

You're credit card suggestion is great! Homeowners should be a good option, but in the last 5 or so years insurance companies have become much less consumer friendly. A relatively small claim can result in much bigger premiums.

Checking the benefits a credit card offers makes sense, and could save a bundle of cash in the long run.

Oh I am GUILTY!!!! However in my defense, the folks I work for don't give you enough room on the server to back the thing up and don't like to "waste" money on the external hard drives LOL! (One day they will learn!)

(I do have my current client backed up and all my personal stuff is backed up at home....:scared1: )
