Our planned vacation dates keep changing for next year, but I think we are set now. I see that I can book tomorrow morning for my first day's stay at my home resort, AKV (our first time there as DVC members!), for July 1, 2011.

I have entered my dates in the point calculator, and realize I am 12 points short! I thought I would be ok, I would just rent the points from Disney for $15 per point, but I was just reading more on here, and I see that I can only buy them 7 months out! Oops!

Am I still able to make the reservation tomorrow, even if I am short, and then I buy the points later, or are you only allowed to reserve with the points you have, and then cross your fingers that the room is available in 7 months?

I would stay somewhere else that night, but we are driving down over two nights, and DH doesn't want to spend a third night in a hotel unpacking and repacking (though he doesn't do any of it, but that's another story!;)).

There isn't anything I can do about this at such a late date, is there?

You can just borrow 12 points from next year

Sorry, I forgot to mention, we are banking and borrowing but still short those points.

I wish I had the money to burn and just quick add on 25 points tomorrow, but that college tuition has to be paid next week! :scared1:

You can reserve as many days as you have enough points for. It is not possible to save a room which is essentially what you are asking and would be bypassing the home resort period. At 7 months you can attempt to reserve the last day that requires the additional 12 points.

You don't say what room type you are reserving but you'll probably be ok at 7 months unless it's something like concierge or a value room. The other thing you can do is see if you can get an AKV point transfer from someone or rent one night from someone.

you could always rent them? here or from a 'pro'...the fella on here does this very thing...david is his name..someone will chime in with it i'm sure....
best of luck to ya......

They would need to get a transfer from David. If they rent, they would be required to rent a single day (or more days if desired). You can't just "rent" points and have them added to your contract.

OP, if the first or last day of your trip is a Fri or Sat night, the odds may be with you at 7 months out to just drop that day from your reservation. Just reserve as many days as you can with your points.

You shouldn't have trouble getting AKV at 7 months. You could book a day or two short and add them at 7 months.

Thanks for the info!

I will just drop the first night then, and reserve it in 7 months once I can rent the points from Disney.

If I read correctly, even if I had the points transferred into my account by someone and paid them instead, I still would have to wait until 7 months out to reserve, correct?

Worst thing that happens, we stay offsite one night, pack and unpack 3 times in a row, I hear my DH complain about it, and I make myself listen to him and agree with him. I guess I can agree with him once, right? ;)

Transferred points retain their original resort and use year. If you transferred in AKV points, you could use them at 11 months. If you transferred in points from another resort, you'd have to wait for the 7 month window.

Depending on your travel plans and how open you are to the idea, you can do your first night on cash somewhere else. We've done this a few times - revisiting favorite resorts. We fly in around 3:00, check into a different hotel on cash (sometimes even offsite!) enjoy that hotel and pool for the day, then the next day (if its a Disney hotel) we have Disney move our bags and head off to the parks. Throw swimsuits in daybags for kids and midday take a break at our "home" and the kids swim while I check us in.

Nope - if you get someone to transfer you AKV resort points then you can book at 11 months or anytime after that.

Another option is to see if they have your room type and size available on member cash. If so they can link that reservation to the point one (if booked thru MS) and you wouldn't have to move. Then if for some reason you couldn't book it on points at 7 months you'd still have the same room.

I would likely change the last day rather than the first. That way you will have a bit more flexibility for airfares etc. I agree about maybe doing one night as cash or off site. We have done it before, and in that case, it's easiest to do it at the beginning of a trip instead of the end unless you have early flights out, and want to stay near the airport the last night.
