reserved seats and airline changes

On airlines like Airtran where you pay for your assigned seat what happens when your flight is changed? If they cancel your flight completely and put you on a different one will they transfer your seat assignment over, what if someone already has those seats will they keep you together.

On airlines like Airtran where you pay for your assigned seat what happens when your flight is changed? If they cancel your flight completely and put you on a different one will they transfer your seat assignment over, what if someone already has those seats will they keep you together.

This happened to us for our upcoming cruise. Our return was an 1145am nonstop. Perfect. They cancelled that and put us on a connecting flight & never told us. I called to have us switched to another nonstop and it was no problem. (except that it's 616pm so we have all day to kill now.)
After I hung up I realized that we had paid for seat assignments and called them back. The rep was really nice and asked what configuration we were seated in originally. (there are 6 of us.) He put us in the same configuration and all was well. He didn't ask our exact seat row/# and we didn't care as long as we're together.
So far our 'new' flight hasn't changed but they still have 3 months to play with their schedule.
