Has anyone ever had a pre-assigned room and still been upgraded or do only non-assigned rooms get them.

Yep...I was! I picked our cabin 15 months in advance, Cat 6. We got our docs with the cabin number and then a week later when I called to make our REAS plans I was told we were upgraded to a Cat 4! :) At first I was a little afraid because we were on Deck 8 and I've heard stories of noise from Deck 9 above. But when we checked in at the port the CM told me we were in a fabulous location..and he was right! Never heard a thing from above!

I booked our January '05 Wonder cruise in mid October of this year and booked two Cat 9 oceanview cabins and was assigned specific cabins numbers.

I checked our DCL ressie online (booked directly with DCL) and saw that we were upgraded to two Cat 6 verandah cabins with cabin numbers!!! I was quite happy!!!

So, yes, it really does not matter how far out you book or if you have a GTY or cabin assignments....upgrades do sometimes happen.

I picked at cat 11 room on deck 7 (figuring secret veranda) When we arrived at the port, before going in the terminal, the cm asked to look at our documents. He checked them off on a binder. Our new room number was there. We were upgraded to a cat 7.

We reserved a cat 11 for a 9/03 Magic cruise through DU about two months prior to the cruise date, and we had a cabin assigned. About two weeks before our cruise, our TA called to say that we had been upgraded to a cat 6. We already had our docs with our cat 11 room number on them.
