Reservations Questions - booking today !

I want to book now for May 2006 to make sure that we get the hotel we want.

I read on mousesavers that it is harder to get discounts applied to packages than it is to get them applied to 'room-only' reservations. Anyone with first hand knowledge?

If I book 'room-only' now can I switch the existing reservation to to a package later?

We want the dining package if going rack rate, but might sacrifice it if a great 'room-only' deal becomes available and just put the room savings into the food budget.

We have always booked room only and then added on to the ressie. this time we have booked POFQ and did the tickets and dining at the same time but seperately. It seems to be cheaper than the pkg. deal. That's our opinion.
