Reservation Question

We will be doing our first Vacation as DVC owners this July and are already looking ahead to 2014 Hoping I do not ramble, my question is this..

Our DVC membership (160 pts at BLT) started in December of 2012 with an August 1st UY so we got our 2012 points and last week booked our vacation for July which is a spilt stay at AKV Kidani and BLT (1 BR Villas).

This cost 251 pts so we needed to borrow 91pts from 2013 leaving us with 69 pts that we will be getting Aug. 1st.

DW would like to go to VGC in the summer of 2014 so was planning on making reservations at the 7month mark.

I've heard those reservations can be hard to come by but she wants to ensure we have a vacation for the summer of 2014 whether it's in DL or WDW.

To make sure we have a June vacation in 2014 should we book BLT at the 11month window which would be this July and then try to get in at VGC at the 7month mark. Is this even allowed?? If it is, what about our points? If we tried to book a vacation in July, we'd only have 69 pts (we get 160 more on Aug 1st making it 229 total)..

Would we just have to wait until August 1st to book a July 2014 vaca then?

Sorry for rambling but it's kinda complicated Thanks for any advice!

Kinda mistated that after I read it.. Right now we have 69 - 2013 points available to borrow from and on August 1st, the 160 - 2014 points will be available to borrow.

Yes you are allowed to book your home resort at 11 months and at 7 months attempt to switch resorts which is advisable. When booking your vacation for June of 2014 you will still be in your 2013 Use yr thus you will have to borrow points from 2014 Use yr to complete the reservation. The points must be available when the reservation occurs not when you are booking the reservation. Hope this makes sense

Points need to be available in your account based on your reservation date, not your booking date.

Booking VGC at 7 months can be a challenge. By the time you check availability, cancel your fall back reservation, and try to book VGC, the VGC availability may be gone. This has happened to us a couple of times.

Even if you book through MS, an hour later than online, not all MS Advisor's have the ability to hold inventory as they cancel and rebook.

I would try VGC at 7 months online and hope that a desirable WDW resort is available if VGC doesn't work out and I would waitlist VGC.

This is a common misconception with new members. Points don't "deposit" on your use year start date. They are in there years before. If you look online, you should have August 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 points in your account. They can be used based on the date of stay. A June or July 2014 stay would be in your 2013 use year, so you can use 2012 banked, 2013 current, borrowed 2014. A stay 8-1-14 or after could use 2013 banked, 2014 current, 2015 borrowed. This is where your use year choice comes into play.
