Hi all! I am planning on my first trip as a DVC owner for the 2nd week in May 2009. I will be taking my mother since DH is not ready to go back yet (he is not the Disney nut that I am).

I am hoping to get a BWV standard view studio since we plan on spending most of our time in Epcot. I have, however, read that the studios tend to go fast. I am thinking I should call at the 11 month window (in a couple of weeks) and make a reservation at AKV just to be on the safe side then try to get into BWV at 7 months. I am wondering how this would work though. Would I have to cancel my AKV reservation before making a BWV reservation or could I do it after?

Do you have enough current year points to book the BWV without cancelling the AKV? That would be the best, if you are still in the banking part of the UY. If not, you could cancel/book one day at a time. You can ask MS about availability, and perhaps just wait until the end of the period, so just cancel and book all at once.

I am a person who lost what I wanted during the very small amount of time that it takes to cancel the old and book the new. The "old" was gone for me as well. I had wanted any sort of inn room, or studio at VB, and gave up SV BWV studios. This was going to be a 3 night "swap" and I had been told it was available, then "whoops." For the next 3 months, I was booked at SSR in a studio, but the Friday before the stay was to begin on Sunday, an MS person called me, saying he had read my letter (finally) and they were able to give us something at VB!!! Yeah! I will not go through that again, and I will say that it was only 3 months out when I was making the switch. If you are booking 7 months out, I would think that the availability will be greater.

I will not try to change so close to my arrival date again. I've since moved reservations at 7 months out with no problem. We have also added more points at different resorts, so it's more likely that I'm booking at a "home" resort in the home resort priority period.

Best wishes to you. As I said, I do think that at 7 months out, you are much less likely to lose the reservation. Also, May is a very good time to book, it's not one of the busy DVC periods.

Well, I plan on using banked points for this trip, and I won't have enough for both reservations. I guess I will play it more by ear at the time depending on what availability looks like.

Is it possible to book using current year points and then change to banked points, or do you have to stick with what you originally specified at time of booking?

I canceled a recent trip. The reservation had used some banked points. I asked member services and they were kind enough to apply the banked points to my December reservation, so I can bank all my current points.

They will usually be able to do this, but you have to ask, they don't do it automatically.
