Reservation priority, cancellations, and banked points

Can someone please help me understand or figure out what to do? I fear I've thoroughly messed up my reservations and point allotments because I apparently do not understand DVC's policy of point order priority. I don't know what else to call it.

Basically, it appears that when I banked 2017 points, made reservations, then cancelled reservations, it limited the amount of 2018 points I can bank into 2019. I thought once I banked points, they also essentially became 2018 points, and regardless of when I made or cancelled reservations, my "banked" 2018 points would be used up first. But they're telling me this is not the case. I now have 44 points left in 2018 that I cannot bank to 2019 because DVC considers them former 2017 points, not current 2018 points that I thought they were. Why wouldn't DVC adjust them as I cancel 2018 reservations? What can I do? I won't have enough for future year reservations!

And to make matters worse, I've already made a reservation with my 2019 points. But I had planned to bank my 2018 points. Should I bank first, cancel the reservation, and then rebook so my banked points will be used up first? Why doesn't DVC reallocate them automatically when I put them all in the same use year?

This is so confusing and I'm soooooo disappointed. I was in tears on the phone and just had to hang up with member services because I couldn't speak.

Can you give us a breakdown of exactly what you did & the dates of reservations? Also your UY.

The cast member offered to switch one night for me as a "courtesy," but I was so upset, I just got off the phone.

So you banked 44 pts from 2017 to 2018. Then you canceled the Dec 2018 reservation & made 2 Feb 2019 reservations? All at your home resort? VGC?

ETA. I think I see. You banked all your 2017 points (240) to 2018, then modified a Dec 2018 reservation several times, then added 2 separate Feb 2019 reservations. If this is the case then yes they should reallocate your points. Unless I’m not understanding something about the 7 month window and point reallocation. Maybe some more expert help is in order @Dean @crisi @drusba @Bing Showei @CarolMN

Ok, so according to that thread, it won't automatically reallocate, but member services is supposed to be willing to reallocate as their usual policy, not an exception like this cast member was telling me? Is there a policy in writing about this? I looked at the member documents and while it says I need to bank points first in order to make a reservation with banked points in the next UY, it says nothing about what happens to banked points (and other reservations) if you cancel a reservation at least 31 days in advance.

Correct that reallocations don't automatically happen. You have to manage your points which really is good vs having some unknown person making assumptions about your planned usage.

You can actually do this online now with the modification feature although it likely would be better for you to more fully understand the system first.

BLESS YOU!!! I didn't realize the new modify would do it, so I checked it out, and by golly, it does!! I don't know why that silly CM gave me such a fright over something I could change myself!

I would like to reallocate some points and tried to do it through the modify feature on the reservation. I didn't see the option to change the points, only to search for a different room or dates. What am I missing? Thanks!

There isn’t a selection that say reallocate points. Simply use the modify function and just search for the same exact dates that you already have and just go through the booking process without changing anything. It will rebook the exact same reservation for and reallocate the points when doing so.

Thank you! I was afraid to go any further for fear of losing my reservation. I was successful in changing the point allocation. We bought in 2017 and I'm still trying to figure it all out. I went a little crazy booking, borrowing and banking! Time to slow down and make a better plan.
