We planned a trip to Disneyland with 4 adults and one child. We used our points to book a one bedroom suite at the Disneyland hotel. Well now it turns out it is just going to be 2 adults and 1 child. So I am thinking we don't need the suite and I want to switch to a regular hotel room at the Grand Californian which will save a significant number of points.

However, I understand that the points that we will save in "downgrading" will be reservation points. This just means I can only use them at non-DVC's, right? I think I want to use them at Grand Hotel, part of the concierge collection, will this work? Also, I thought I read that I will now only be able to use these points to make reservations a maximum of 60 days in advance or something like that, am I just getting confused? Thanks for any insight.

Since the points are already reservation points, you would not have the restriction in the last 60 days of your use year. Normally, a reservation for outside of DVC has to be made before the 60 day mark of the end of your use year.

You can use reservation points for any of the options in the Conceirge Collection, the Disney Collection or the Adventurers' Collection. So if you like, you can use the "saved" reservation points for the Grand Hotel, subject to availability.

You cannot use reservation points for DVC resorts or for an exchange via Interval International (World Passport Collection).

As DebbieB already posted, the 60 day rule does not apply in this case. (The 60 day rule says that you must make reservations for non-DVC options at least 60 days prior to the end of your use year).

Also, AFAIK, there is no "holding account" for reservation points should you cancel/change 30 days or less prior to arrival. (Points in the holding account can only be used to make a reservation 60 days or less from arrival).

Reservation points expire at the end of the use year if they are not used.

If you cancel the DL reservation too late, the points are forfeited. Not sure of the deadline - I think it is a few days prior. If this might apply to you, you'll want to check with MS.

Best wishes -

Oh no! Unless we can plan some kind of non-DVC trip before December, I am going to lose 100 points!
