Reservation after banking deadline

Hi everyone! We have a reservation for spring break in March, our banking deadline is the end of January. Last year we had the same thing and everything shut down the week before our trip was supposed to happen. Thankfully DVC made good with those points but it was stressful for a few months not knowing what would happen.

Not trying to turn this political at all but with the change in administration happening later this month I can't help but wonder if there could be another forced shut down of sorts and the same thing happening again, but this time DVC not being as nice as they were last year.

Has anyone else given thought to this?

Honestly, I would not count on another exception as last year it was completely unexpected situation,

Now, people are aware something could happen so take the risk traveling outside the banking window,

While I think it is slim that DVC will close resorts..parks are a different matter...I would not expect the same level of exceptions this time around.

Always a risk traveling after banking window. Personally, I’m disappointed that DVC is still allowing borrowed points back and have written to them to say as much.

Thank you! That's exactly why I posted this. I feel like what they did last year was very generous and I just can't see them doing the same thing again. I'm usually not one that likes to take the risk of booking after my banking window unless I'm 100% sure I'll be going no matter what but with covid around and all nothing is guaranteed

I don't think the basis of your concern for a shut down is possible - states control themselves for that. Your concern is more about hospitalizations etc. You'll be at risk but personally I do not think there will be another shut down in FL like last spring. You'll probably have a good idea before your banking deadline.

If nothing else you could cancel and bank and then borrow to rebook the reservation if things were open. I do expect there will continue to be a fair amount of shifting in availability thru to the summer months so you can probably get a room closer to the travel time.

I'm not.

It encourages owners to book and use those points when they otherwise might just decide the risk is too great to even think about a trip. If what I believe is true then this one rule is actually using more borrowed points than otherwise would be. Also by not allowing them to be returned it adds pressure to make a trip for financial reasons of losing points when someone might otherwise feel uncomfortable doing so. I don't think that's appropriate either.

It's one thing DVC is doing that I think both makes business sense and is helpful to the membership and shows a bit of heart too.

Where I do think it fell short is that they should have been allowing 100% borrowing for the majority of the time up until perhaps the Sept 11 month window but that's in the past now.

The governor of Florida is still the same. The federal government has no authority in this area. I wouldn't worry about it really. That's just looking for trouble that isn't here yet.

The returning of points that were borrowed prior to the crisis makes sense.

With the exception of VGC, once all resorts were opened, they should have stopped the practice at some point for those ones that were made new for trips in 2021.

As with all decisions, DVCM has more info and make what they feel is best. Some I agree with like waiving holding still but returning borrowed points while restrictions to 50% for short term trips isn’t one I do.

I also think VGC owners should be given more consideration too

Quite the opposite IMO. Returning points that were borrowed before the closure was the "nice" thing for DVC to do. Allowing it now only encourages using more future points than what otherwise would probably happen. It's the smart business decision at this point and not about being nice.

I'll stick by my supposition that allowing borrowing and the return now if the reservation is cancelled is going to encourage borrowing and the use of points removing them from future use. I already listed the other reasons I think it's the correct decision which does retain some "nice" part still of not adding pressure to keep a trip when not comfortable.
