Possible to Switch Room Types During Stay?

Situation - Had booked a studio for my husband and I at the 11 month mark. Our trip is in 3 weeks. Adult son is now joining us so we'd like to switch to a 1 bedroom. I have a waitlist and am stalking the site but was wondering... Once we check in, if a 1 bedroom became available for consecutive days at the backend of our trip, are we able to switch / upgrade, paying the additional points of course or once we check in, are we locked into our room type?

It has happened, but highly unlikely. There is no harm in asking

Just be aware that the front desk CMs aren’t always good at dealing with point based rooms so know to make errors on peoples accounts.
