We are trying to decide whether to buy additional points through a resale or through Disney. We currently own at BWV with a Feb use year. If we were to buy through a resaler, we would have two contracts... is this correct? Are there any advantages or disadvantages to this? What are some of the resalers that you would recommend? Has anyone had Disney opt to use their FROR? Any advise would be GREATLY appreciated. Once last question (although I have many) how does the reservation process work if you have two contracts? If they are at the same resort, can you easily combine the points?

I believe if you buy resale, you will initially have two contracts. I think there may be circumstances where you could have those combined, but I'm not sure of that.
Are there any advantages or disadvantages to this?
The advantage of having two contracts would be that smaller contracts may be easier to sell. Obviously, one use year (whether in multiple contracts or not) is simplier to keep track of than multiple use years.
What are some of the resalers that you would recommend?
The sponsor of this board (The Timeshare Store) will be recommended by many, including myself. The rare problems I've seen in resales have not come from the brokers - they've been from unscrupulous sellers.
Has anyone had Disney opt to use their FROR?
YES! Go here and then click on the last page for the latest info on ROFR http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=720134
Any advise would be GREATLY appreciated.
The resale process is complex, frustrating, and slow...but you should save some money. Buying direct is faster and easier, but probably more costly, depending on how many points you want to add. The more points you are adding, the more attractive resale becomes. Obviously, you have to do the math.

If you are going to buy BWV again, there have been BWV contracts ROFR'd recently at $80, which means you will have to pay more than that to get past ROFR, plus closing costs, going resale. Buying direct, you will pay $89 with no closing costs. You can add points direct in increments as small as 25, and Disney financing is available for contracts of 50 points or more. If you add on points from SSR, there is a nice add-on incentive for purchases of 120 points or more; that incentive does not apply to direct add-ons at the other resorts. Points from Disney are subject to availability, points through resale are subject to ROFR.

You just have to see where you can get a contract that meets your needs, do the math, and figure out which fits your particular situation better.
Once last question (although I have many) how does the reservation process work if you have two contracts? If they are at the same resort, can you easily combine the points?
Inside seven months, it doesn't matter as long as you have points which will be available for the time of your stay. If you are using the 11 month window, you have to have enough points available at that resort for the reservation. You wouldn't be able to use points from another resort to make reservations at BWV at 10 months, for example.

In the resale process, you can keep the points together with one membership number only if they have the same UY. However, these will always stay as separate contracts as far as reselling again goes. If you add on through Disney, they will only add on to your original UY (but once again the contracts remain separate as far as reselling goes).

If you find the same UY for a re-sale contract, you must notify Disney before closing if you want it combined into your existing contract--once a second number has been issued, it cannot be changed later. It's easier and more convenient to have one number and one set of banking rules to follow (although lots of people do have two or more, me included).

If you are thinking about adding on a small contract, you might as well go through Disney--by the time you pay closing fees the cost is the same and there is a shorter wait time to get into the system if the points are available. Of course, if you are adding on BC, you could be waiting a looooong time. Check with your guide.

If the use year months are different, they will be two separate contracts and must be managed separately.

If the same use year, as mentioned, you can have Disney combine them. They may still be different resorts.

Disadvantages of having 2 contracts:

Points are not combined for banking purposes.
Example: 1-contract (150 BWV points + 150 SSR point add-on) is considered a 300 point contract. At the 50% banking window, you can bank 1/2 of 300 points. (Assuming you didn't previously bank any points.). This means you could use all 150 BWV points, and still bank all 150 SSR points at the 50% window.

2-contract situation: You use all 150 BWV points. At the 50% window you can only bank 75 SSR points which is 50% of the 150 point SSR point contract.

Points are not combined for making reservations.

Say you had 50 BWV points left and 50 SSR points left, in separate contracts. You want to make a reservation that uses 66 points (22pts/night). You cannot use all 50 BWV points and just 16 SSR points because you cannot use points from a single contract for a partial day. You would have to use 44 BWV for 2 nights, and 22 SSR points for the 3rd night as a totally separate reservation. You then link the two reservations so you don't have to check-out and check-in again. The main problem is now you have a BWV contract with only 6 points remaining in it, and an SSR contract with 28 points remaining.

If the contracts are combined (master + add-on), you make one reservation. You can use all 50 BWV points and 16 SSR points. This would leave you with zero BWV points left to manage, and 34 SSR points left.

Note: that with separate contracts, you can transfer points between contracts, that is another step. Also, you cannot transfer banked or borrowed points. And you can only transfer points in one direction in a given year.

The terms used can be confusing. We have added on 4 times, once through Disney and 3 times through resales. We own at 2 different resorts but ALL our points are the same use year (Oct.) We have never asked that the points be under a single membership number, but they are. (Perhaps our resale agents did this good thing for us without being asked). Our banking percentages are based on the total of ALL our points at BOTH resorts, which is great. Our reservations at each of the 2 resorts are made as if our points at that resort were in one big pool. The only thing I need to be careful about is keeping track of how many points I have at each resort if I make reservations more than 7 months out.
Many folks use a computer program to keep track of separate use years on their points. I just don't want to deal with that. I am glad we have many small contracts in the event that we need to sell some day (smaller ones often sell faster). But I am also grateful that all points have a single use year so we never have to think about moving points around or designating a specific contract when making reservations.
Good luck! It DOES get easier as time goes on, and this board will help!
