Resale DVC - Pick resort or lowest price points?

Hi all. We are going to add on to our DVC points and I have a question. I KNOW it is a personal choice thing (buy where you love etc) so I'm just looking for people with experiences managing two different resorts. We like both AKV and OKW.

We currently have AKV with a Dec UY. I want to add on a couple of smaller point contracts to make up the difference in what we need. IE, I'd rather 2 60 pt contracts than one 120 point contract and I do plan to stay with the Dec UY, no matter what.

Given that, I am trying to decide if we should keep with AKV at about $87 pp or go with maybe OKW which is $66 pp. We could get more points or save a little $$ if we went OKW but I'm not sure how much of a pain it would be to keep track and manage two different resorts. We could stay one time at OKW and another time at AKV.

Besides the 11 / 7 month window am I missing any other potential hiccups?

If you're adding on because you don't have enough points for the type of stays you want at AKV and you're someone who wants either the value rooms or concierge level - buy AKV points.

Resale, the price difference is about $15-$20 per point as you mentioned, so you're talking about $2,400 or so in savigs (top end) to forego the advanced booking window.

If you have the points you need at AKV through banking/borrowing and are just looking for points to stay wherever is available, buy SSR or OKW resale.

We have BWV points and just added on at BLT. Paid the premium to have the 11-month window there in case we ever want a MK view and to ensure we can get the SV given the limited # available. Certainly could have gotten more points at another resort through resale. Our plan is to use the BLT points every other year through banking/borrowing. So, not worried about two home resorts.

Now, I would as you are planning, NOT get two use years. That means to membership accounts, two member numbers and not being able to pool the points unless you transfer points between the two accounts.

You are right. We have enough points to go two maybe three times a year in studio value accommodations if we go at the right time. BUT we want to move to the 1BR hence the need for more points.

We could definitely do 1BR in AKV and 1BR OKW alternating.

Good luck with your resale purchase. I own at SSR and I am looking to add on there, but if a nice 100 pt contract became available at AKL I would love that because I could book the conceirge level. Never anything in March and I check everyday.

Keep in mind the contract expiration date. HH, VB, BWV, VWL, BCV all expire in 2042, along with original OKW contracts (some 2057 OKW resales are available). Also look at maintenance fees. HH & VB are higher than WDW resorts.

I have done over the years 3 add-ons, small contracts, the three contracts total only 104 points. But Idid all the same resort and same use year, makes it very easy to track, and when ever I book, I always tell the agent to use the smaller contracts first. Just so if I end up banking my points, it is usually only the larger contract as the smallers are used up.

We are about to close on our 4th resale contract - all at different DVC resorts, but all with the same use year. It has been no trouble keeping track of the different points. I actually like having points at different resorts - at 11 months out, I have several properties to choose from when making our reservations. When we close, we will have 2 contracts that we will use for making our reservations at exactly 11 months, and 2 contracts that we can "play" with at the 7 month mark, or use for cruises, HHI, etc.

You might want to look at dues history. I think they are both right around $5/point. But I suppose there is some reason to be concerned that AKV will accelerate at a slightly faster rate. (Although I think over time OKW's increases have been slightly more than others.) Just thinking about it without data, AKV seems like it will be more expensive to maintain in the long run, but I'm just guessing.

The only drawback that I could see is that if you want to take full advantage of the 11 month window to book your whole trip, you would be using either banked or borrowed points for every trip.m And, for some, this may not even been seen as a drawback.

However, if they are all AKV points, you book there every year and at 7 months, you trade out to OKW, every other year. You still get the different resorts, but for the most part, are only traveling using current UY points.

But, you would be saving money by doing OKW and if you ever wanted a GV, then owning there is important as they are a great deal.

I was actually wondering this today! I was looking around at resales and was looking for 100 DEC UY points and there are MANY options... I'm just trying having a hard time deciding what I want to do...those SSR prices are so tempting! But the location of BWV and BCV is hard to beat... I have a goal of what I want for points and how many at each resort for how I want to travel... But SSR cheaper price and cheaper MF's might be winning out for me... as the THV help too! I just don't know what to do!?:confused3
