Buy where the home resort booking advantage will get you the most bang for YOUR family:

AKV: You'll need the 11 month advantage to book the Value and Concierge categories most times of the year.

SSR: You'll need the 11 month advantage to book the THV for most times of the year.

The extra bathroom and capacity of AKV 1 bedrooms (at Kidani) is a plus, but as you have already noticed, getting into AKV at 7 months doesn't seem so tough. OTOH, getting into SSR at 7 months isn't hard, either.

If you don't think you will ever want to stay in Concierge, Value or THV, then consider cost - and don't forget to compare the annual dues in addition to the initial buy in price.

IF you “had to have” an AKV SV reservation at the busiest times or wanted a shot at CL I would say AKL, but since you have time I would put in offers in the mid 60s for SSR, sooner or later DVD will get tired of buying them back and over the life of the contract your yearly points will cost about $0.75-1.00 less per usable point. If you get 160 SSR you can always add on 40 or so AKV points direct from DVC, which is “painless”.

Thanks for all the thoughts! Looks like it is neck and neck as far as the poll goes. We got a value 1br with just 3months notice (booked for late Sept), but I realize at other times of the year this may not be possible. We are flexible as to when we would travel right now, but as our kids get into school it will change to early June, early Aug or maybe for a long holiday weekend somewhere during the year.

My only reservation about SSR is the fact I have not seen it or stayed there. I looked through the SSR lovers thread, the pics thread, the allears.net pics, the dvcnews pics.....I don't see why this resort gets such a bad wrap around here! It looks fantastic! All the different choices of areas, the pools (the new paddock pool looks incredible!), the boat to DTD and all the activities.....not to mention as of now we could try to stay in any resort we want at 7months

I understand the bus system seems to be an issue, but like I said we have a car and I like the idea of being parked very close to the room. Better than a long hike to the parking lot (since no more free valet! we did LOVE that in Sept at AKV).

We both like to get the best "value" for the $$$ (and I have read enough to realize the DVC really isn't a $$ saver, but we can afford it and I think it would be something of great value for my family over the years)

When my wife and I bought in for the first time we made our choice primarily on best bang for your buck. We went with a 230 point OKW contract. We had never stayed there, but we never stayed in any of the DVC resorts at that time. We had stayed in WL and AKL, but not the DVC side of it. We also knew that if we wanted to stay outside of OKW and couldn't that we would be okay with that. That being said when we were ready to add on we knew that this purchase would be a more definitive buy where you want stay purchase. Hands down we knew we wanted AKV. Besides having stayed in the lodge we knew our boys would love this resort. The extra bathroom is also great. When we bought in we bought a small contract to get our foot in the door for the 11 month booking window. We figured we would either bank/borrow points or do split stays. Two months after adding on we attended a DVC event and ended up adding on again. We discussed taking advantage of the incentives they had for BLT, but stuck with AKV. BLT wasn't really our style and we knew that AKV was. This past October we stayed at BLT. Following our stay we were disappointed that we had not grabbed BLT when we had the chance. What this all boils down to is this. If you don't care where you stay if you don't get your first choice then go with SSR for the extra points (you can never have too many). If you think this might be an issue then you should probably buy AKV. If you can try and experience the resorts prior to buying in. We had never stayed at BLT, but assumed that it wasn't "us" based on pics and video. Until you stay somewhere you can never really be sure what you will think of it.
