Requesting specific seating options

When do you request specific seating options with your dining reservations (ie a fireworks view or outdoor seating)? Last trip I asked as we checked into the resturant, with no luck. Did we just have bad luck last trip or is there a way to request in advance?

We try showing up 20minutes prior to the ADR time, make the request and let them know we don’t mind waiting longer to make it possible. Doesn’t always work but has for us many times over the years.

Like others have said, get there early and make the request. We're 50% when it came to this. We requested a window seat at California Grill for the fireworks, but 30 minutes past our ADR, were told that fireworks would be starting soon and a table would not be available in time.
We were successful in our Ohana request though. Only waited 15 minutes past our ADR.
Doesn't hurt to ask, just be prepared that it might not happen. Luck of the draw!
