Hey all.
I've generally been staying over on FB since I got an account, but since I have friends involved in this issue I'd rather post this here than make those in a worse position than me have to face the grim reality over and over.
I got a phone call yesterday afternoon letting me know that one of Emma's best friends and classmates (also named Emma) had passed away. She had been at school on Monday and Tuesday, and went home with a stomach bug on Tuesday afternoon. After remaining out of school on Wednesday with her mom, who is a teacher at their school, she passed away Thursday morning. As best we know at this time, she had a seizure and was rushed to the hospital where she passed. As you can imagine, the whole community is in a state of shock. We've had some tough questions from a grieving little girl who really shouldn't have to be facing the death of her close friends this young. As a mother, my heart goes out to the other mother, who lost her husband at Christmastime last year. Emma K. leaves behind a mother and two brothers who will never be the same. The little group of girls who had bonded in kindergarten and remained together over the past 2 years is full of sorrow. At a school where children should be laughing, there are tears. Not knowing what caused the sudden illness is worrisome to the other parents, because, while we do not want to be insensitive to a grieving family's needs, if the illness was caused by something contagious, we will need to take precautions for our own families.
Please join me in sending your thoughts, wishes, and prayers (if you pray) toward the Emma K.'s family and all her little friends who are surely asking, "Why?"
