According to several published reports this past week, a visual-effects studio that has worked on recent Disney films such as "Tron: Legacy" and Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" soon will move its operations from California to Port St. Lucie.
The move should bring about 70 jobs to the state, and more are forecast.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Digital Domain Productions Inc., based in Venice, Calif., was in the process of acquiring Westlake Village, Calif.-based In-Three Inc.
In-Three was founded in 1999 and has been at the forefront of converting films into the popular 3-D format. The company developed and patented a process called "Dimensionalization," which it has used to convert 2-D films. In addition to Disney films "Tron: Legacy" and "Alice in Wonderland," the studio also worked on Disney's "G Force" production, too.
With the sale, most of In-Three's staff will move here to Florida.
Digital Domain is an Academy Award-winning digital-production studio that began building a production site in Port St. Lucie in 2009. According to a L.A. Times report, It has received millions of dollars in state and local funding, and the move from California to Florida is seen as favorable by the company because of the lower labor costs here in the Sunshine State.
Also, Digital Domain has an agreement to hire 500 people by 2014. The average salary is forecast to be about $65,000.
And, according to a press release from the company, Digital Domain also has plans to build the Digital Domain Institute in West Palm Beach, where it will offer a four-year program in digital media in conjunction with Florida State University's College of Motion Picture Arts.
No purchase price was disclosed.
