Reporter and Camerman killed on air.

I honestly have no words for this.:sad1:
I am so sad for these people, their families, their friends, their co-workers, and for all of us.
This world is getting crazier and crazier that I'm so scared for my children, my friend's children, your children, everyone's children - this world is going to get crazier and crazier.
My heart is feeling very heavy today.
My prayers are with these families and all the people their lives have touched.

They were both in relationships with other people at the station. The girfriend of the cameraman was watching the broadcast from the control room. :( It was her last day on the job and they'd had a celebration for her this morning. He was going to move with her. The other couple hadn't announced their relationship publicly yet, but had just moved in together and were planning to get married. Both the reporter and the cameraman grew up nearby.

There is also a full image of the shooter here. Supposedly now being chased down the highway. Ugh.

I assumed they were simply collaterally involved in another incident somehow. Their co workers must be even more shaken than I first thought.

Ugh - this is not too far from where I live, maybe a couple of hours. Our local news says they know who the shooter is and expect to have him in custody soon.

We didn't share this publicly, but Alison Parker and I were very much in love. We just moved in together. I am numb. We were together almost nine months. It was the best nine months of our lives. We wanted to get married. We just celebrated her 24th birthday. She was the most radiant woman I ever met. And for some reason she loved me back. She loved her family, her parents and her brother. I am comforted by everyone at WDBJ7. We are a family. She worked with Adam every day. T...hey were a team. I am heartbroken for his fiancee. She is our morning show producer. This is unconscionable. But I WILL share her story because it is one full of life, dreams, love and amazing journalism. She just finished working on an incredible special on child abuse and it was fantastic. We will get through this and there will be justice. Your thoughts and prayers mean the world to me.

The alleged shooter's photo isn't clear at all on my computer.
Just a bit of a warning, the photo above it is of the reporter. She looks very frightened. Terrible.
The Daily Mail shifts photos all the time, so it could change again.

I saw it clearly. The link above is worse - an actual video of the shooting. I guess it's out there. Scary, because of copycats, or people becoming insensitive to these types of atrocities. I will edit a warning in.

I get that the video is out there because this happened during a live broadcast, but is it actually being shown on television? If I turned on CNN or NBC or whatever, are they broadcasting the video, or portions of it even?

I saw it earlier. You don't see anything but the reporter screaming.

I can't even look. Stuff like that really gets to me and I've had to sit through more of it than I care to think about. I was just wondering if anyone knew what the position of broadcast TV was about using the video.

I have not seen it on the Today show yet, it's available on CNN.com, I don't know if they're broadcasting it though.

I didn't know that anything was actually aired "live" anymore. I thought everything aired had at least a few seconds delay.

There will be a delay of anywhere from 1/4 second up to 7-10 seconds to get the remote feed back to the studio. There's probably ~1/4-1/2 second between what comes out of the studio until it's received by a OTA receiver. If you're using a cable or satellite set top box, add another 5-10 seconds. All these delays are because of necessary equipment to process the signal. All the signals appear "live" to anyone at the studio.

Most television stations are NOT using a "time shift" delay to give someone override capability if something goes wrong. Radio stations that do call ins will have something to do that, but not television stations.

I think CNN broadcasted a video earlier, I stepped away. I don't know exactly what they showed, Carol Costello said they'd only play it once.
