Replacing ipod battery

Has anyone ever done this? My son will be buying himself a (refurbished) ipod, and is happy to give his old one to me -- but the battery doesn't last for more than a few minutes. A new one is only $30 online, and he found directions for opening the case and replacing it, but I'd like to know if anyone has done this successfully. We don't have to worry about voiding any warranty, since this was purchased four or five years ago. Any tips? TIA!

Already said that there is no warranty, since this is an older ipod. Apple store won't do it.

My husband just tried to do this last week- he says to pay someone to do it. He tried and it was a miserable failure- and he's an electrician and really good with his hands.

We sent our old classic to The Pod Drop in Michigan. Really fast service. They sent us an envelope, it was overnight to them, they fixed that day and sent if back overnight. I think it was $30-$40

I changed my wife's ipod battery out.... found a video with a step-by-step of how to do it.... turned out to be remarkably easy

I ordered the replacement battery online (also came with a little tool to pop open the case). If you have the directions and the new battery, just do it yourself.... take your time/don't rush it and it'll be simple

My DH does this all the time. Everyone we know asks him to fix their ipods/iphones etc. He learned it all by reading/watching things online. I'm sure if your DS was clever enough to find the info online and understands it, he'll be fine.

I was just talking to my dh about this- he says some of them are "plug in" batteries and some are soldered (sp?) His Nano (it was about 3 years old) was soldered and this made it really difficult to replace.

Yup.

I would base my decision on the instructions that he found online. If the battery is a plug-in one, I'd do it myself. I don't solder, however, so if it needed it I would get someone else to change the battery.

Mixed reviews! I'm going to let my DS do it -- he's very good with this stuff (repairs guitars, took a year of electronics in high school) -- he said the directions online didn't look too difficult. Thought the hardest part would be getting the case off -- one site said to take a hair dryer to loosen the glue holding it together!

Dh managed to crack the screen on my ipod classic the first time he tried to open it. We sent it off to be fixed (I had dropped it into the horse's water trough). A while later he needed to open it again and this time it was not problem at all. Now it needs a new battery (we just talked about this this morning) and DH is going to do it himself.
