Has anyone replaced the foam on their couch cushions? We checked with the manufacturer and we can't get them there? Don't want to buy a new couch but I NEED new cushions!! Any help would be much appreciated.

Well.... I just did this for a chair I had picked up on the curb (aka... garbage picked, lol!). It's a cool mid-century modern chair, but the cushions were nasty (they had a towel safety-pinned over them, they were stained and saggy... yuck). My upholsterer replaced the cushions and recovered the chair with some gorgeous fabric I picked out and now it is good as new (better than new, with my fabulous fabric!). It cost me about $180 to replace the cushions and reupholster (price does not include cost of fabric). Is this the type of info you were looking for?

Looking for cost. Also, I have read some people measure and order the foam themselves....others find a professional. Anyone have experience with doing it themselves???

Any fabric store that carries upholstery fabrics will also carry cushion foam. The normal way to cut it is with an electric carving knife, then fine-trim with a sharp X-Acto. It's sold by the foot. Bring the old ones to compare.

You will get a better result if you also cut a long piece of fiberfill batting and wrap it around the foam like the cover of a book before putting the fabric cover on. It slides in a lot easier and looks smoother.

Enough for the seat cushions of a couch will probably cost between $90-300, depending on the quality of the foam that you buy. The cheapest stuff is seldom a good idea for a couch that is so loved that the cushions need to be replaced.

Look in your yellow pages under upholstery. I did this 20 years ago when I got my parent's hand me down sofa when I graduated from college & it cost almost $100 then. The upholstery shop had three qualities of foam to choose from and the difference in the cheapest & most expensive was about $30. I had to give them the old ones; and they "stuffed" the foam into the seat cushion forms.

I don't know if they still do this but about 15 years ago my parents were able to order new foam cushions from JCPenney for their couch. Otherwise I would suggest contacting an uphulsterer (sp).
