Repeating mistakes with SSR?

Okay, I'm not usually so negative, but I was just looking at the floor plans of SSR, and I'm disappointed. I had hoped they'd make the rooms bigger, like OKW. But even if they don't, there are some things about the BCV layout that I wish they wouldn't copy. For example, has anyone else noticed that the back closet in the 1BR is completely useless for storing anything because the door opens INTO it? And the entry area feels like a waste of space that would be much better used in the living room.

P.S. Sorry if other people have said this before, I've been out of touch of the boards for a while.

I agree about the door opening into the closet. Bad design I think. A real waste of space. I actually like the little entryway at BCV though and think that is a better design than the connecting door in the LR. Affords more privacy if anyone is using the sleeper in the LR and cuts down on noise from the connecting room.

I too was hoping that these units would be more like OKW.

Well, I think they have realized that the unit configurations used in BCV,BWv,VWL work in general, so why reinvent the wheel?

hey if there is a desk in the 1-bedroom (like the BCV) - I think I could put with alot of other problems - I really wish they would put one in OKW.

they can get more villa in less room using the current floor plan - they make more money!!! If they don't make money forget any other DVC resorts - and I would like a few more - like on the monrail.... :earseek: :bounce:

I'm never expecting rooms like OKW (too bad) but but just an extra foot or two would make a big difference. If the units were just 1-2 foot longer then the chair wouldn't need to up against the couch or so close to the sliding glass doors. I'd like it about a foot wider also in the living room.

I was at the SSR models last week and there was a Old Key West Member there just complaining constantly about how small the unit was and how the oval kitchen table was in the way and that it was such a waste and so on and so on. Since I own at BCV and they are pretty much the same, I was really starting to get insulted.

Anyway, they have improved some things. They put some new type of sleeper sofa in that don't have a bar in the middle of your back. There is also not a mattress but instead it is the new foam that contours to your body.

The bench seat is more like a long chair with legs instead of the way it is at BCV. (Remember the one poster whos childs head got caught down below the coushions, this can't happen with the new one)

The desk in the master bedroom has an electrical outlet and phone/computer jack right in the back ledge of the desk.

Unfortunatly, the door still opens in in the master bedroom. I agree this is a design flaw and I mentioned it to our guide. It makes so much of the closet unusable unless you just leave the door open.

That was my main peeve also when we walked through the 1 bdr. models at BWV. There were doors everywhere! I do see the functionality of them but I didnt understand why they would swing the door inside the master closet eliminating all that space.

We recently remodeled, and my master bath is very small and the one thing I changed was the door which swung inside the bath, and replaced it with a sliding door (into the wall) which gives me much more room.

I know wall doors can be more expensive, but not in new construction and space may have been an issue. Also if the door swung outward it would be in the bath, so I definitely see how the layout did not allow for a walk-in closet.

The floorplan is very efficient, and that is the only 34" they wasted. Doesnt help us any, but Im sure it helped the bottom line and the number of units per building.

You know, it's one thing to make wisecracks here on the boards but if I had heard that, I would have been embarrassed for the OKW member. The units at SSR (and BCV, BWV and VWL) are what they are and it's really inane to complain about the room sizes.

The thousands of members who have bought at the DVC resorts with smaller rooms seem to be quite happy.

If that person doesn't like the small rooms, just stay at OKW and be happy.

Okay, getting off that soapbox now!

;)

spiceycat... The SSR models are at BWV.

Seems to be a common behavior with Old Key West members.

Can DVCers just walk in and tour the models? I have a trip coming up at the BCV. Can I just walk over to BWV and see the models of SSR?

hey - don't put us all down (I own at OKW) - there a bad apples in every crowd.

I happen to love the way BCV is set up.

I really love that desk - envy.....::yes::

but I also like the bigger rooms - but DVC is never going to built one like OKW again - they don't have too.... I just wish in one of the rehab that they would put in the desks - but they probably can't because it was not in the originally plan...

when I go solo I generally stay at VWL, BCV or BWV - and I will probably add SSR - especially when I want to enjoy PI...

if a enough members complaint about the closet - won't DVC just take down the doors - I seem to remember a door from the master bedroom to the master bath - when OKW was new - that is not there now.

Thanks, Terry, for letting us know about the improvements. I'm especially glad about the change to the bench -- that sounded like an awful incident.

I guess I'll have to go see the models, too. Any word on when they'll move from BCV to SSR? And by the way, was that OKW member named Rich? ;)

And do they need to take down the doors? Why can't they just open out of the closet instead of in? Can't they just move the hinges?

Just to put a bit more humor into this thread. On our departure day, we were sitting outside of BCV in the valet area waiting for our Towncar. There was a women sitting there who was waiting for her daughter to arrive so her daughter could check both of them in. Aparrantly, her daughter was a member at BCV and made the reservations in her name only. The interesting part is that the women told me she was a member at BWV and had only ever stayed there and she was a bit worried about staying at BCV because they were so much smaller than BWV or OKW. I said "you mean smaller than OKW?" she said "No, you see after they built OKW and BWV they starting making the Villas smaller". It was pretty evident she had never stayed anywhere but BWV. I pretty much just let it go after that! I know there has been some numbers posted about sizes between BWV and BCV and there has been a few discrepencies, but I know there is only a few feet difference.

That's funny, Terry.:D

The door on the closet can't open out into the bathroom as it would hit the sink if it did. The sink bows out a little from the vanity which does look pretty and it would be too narrow of a sink if it didn't. But if the whole 1 BR was a few inches wider, it would have worked, I think.

Don't believe pocket doors would work either. No place for the door to go...on one side is the next unit and on the other is the shower.

I too love the desk!

I had thought the units at SSR might be more OKW sized because there is so much land to work with and also because SSR isn't near a park. But apparently that's not slowing down sales. I suppose DTD is like a park to some folks.

Simba's Mom- Just walk over to the DVC place at BWV and tell them you would like to tour the models. We did just that last Wednesday. We had to wait for you room at OKW to be available so we spent some of the time looking at the villas. They ask if you are already members. They gave us BCV and SSR pins and at the end we got cotton candy in a bag! Lisa took us around and it was great. They are really nice. The decor is very 'rich'.
We ran into another couple who were touring and they asked how we liked DVC and how many times we had been. I told them this was our third trip in 365 days and how much we loved DVC. Hope I helped to make a sale.

Pins? Cotton candy? Such bonuses! I'll definitely be there in December. Thanks for the info.

I am reading this and was thinking that she may have meant number of units, not size of the rooms!
