DW and I are thinking about a 3 night trip during FWF 11/6-9 and I posted on the Rent/Trade board. If we go this route, how do I go about verifying they are legit before sending them any $?

Is there anyone to avoid? (Feel free to PM me if it's against the rules to post names)

You will be just fine renting points on here we have rented out our points numerous times and some people have offered to be references for us but told them no need we have never had anyone even ask for them. I would not bother asking for them if I were renting and have never asked for them from anyone in the past. It would be like the person renting the pints asking for references from the renter. In my opinion it does nothing to build confidence in the transaction.

Thanks for answering both my posts.

Hopefully, we'll have go/no-go plans firmed up this week.

I suggest you read a person's past posts. You will get a good idea of what they are like and whether they are legit DVC owners by seeing what they write on line about DVC

You can also go to the Orange County Records and put in the renter's name. You should come up with the resort that he/she owns at.

Renting is easy and it can save you a lot of $. Have fun.

I don't see how it hurts to ask.

We rented points a couple of times before becoming members ourselves. Upon return, we sent emails to the DVC members thanking them for the points and letting them know that they were welcome to have others contact us if they needed a referral. Several times I did serve as a referral and had no problem with it.

As the holder of the points, you obviously know that you have no intention to defraud the renter.

But as the person being asked to send $1000 or more to a virtually anonymous individual, any steps that can be taken to provide reassurance are welcome. I'm sure I'm not the only renter who had pre-vacation nightmares of arriving at the resort only to be told "sir, I'm sorry but we have no reservation under your name."

I agree with HBC--looking at the posting history is going to give you a better feel for the member. But there's always the possibility of dealing with a "lurker" or a relatively new forum member. In those cases, I see no harm in asking for references. In my mind it certainly would help build confidence in the transaction.

We have been on both sides of the fence renters and rentee. We never asked for a reference from anyone we rented from and have not been asked for them. I honestly don't have an issue with it if people do not care to rent from us because we do not provide references it really is no big deal there are lots of others out there that will. We do not rent ferequently but have done so for this year and the next 2 years as we have no immediate plans on visiting WDW other than the trip we just postponed due to my knee operation that was for Sept. I know some people really get worried about renting points if I was that type of person I would have never rented I am very easy going and relaxed with stuff like that. I am also very trusting and to this day have had no issues with anyone trying to rip my family off for money or anything. I guess it is also what your comfort level is with these things.

As often is the case, free enterprise will sort this out. People are willing to pay for service and reliability. Others are willing to save a few bucks in exchange for less service and less reliability.

If I were a renter, I might be willing to pay 12 or 13 bucks per point if I saw strong references and a low risk/easy method of transaction from the owner. On the other hand, I might expect to save a few bucks from an owner who didn't want to bother.

Even without offering references we still get 12.00 US per point when we do rent out our points and have gotten as high as 15-17/point using Ebay. We usually dont rent them on e bay but have people contact us regarding the points up for auction. We have only really been renting our points over the last 8 months and only because we are not going now till 06. We were supposed to go in Sept for my 7 year old b day but I just had knee surgury so we had to cancel the trip. We were not planning on going back till we did the big family triop and cruise in Dec of 06 with our family and my DW's family there willbe 14 of us all together. So we have rented out our 04 05 and 06 points and will borrow our 07 points for the room portion of the stay.

I agree with CVW

I myself as a new member will need someone to trust me when I rent out points as soon as I close escrow in about 1 month.

I have 218pts to use by 1-31-05 & maybe 109pts also by 1-31-05 - depends on what the previous owner did with the 218 2004 points.

I will need someone to trust me & visa-versa

I like my position of having points - but now I have to wait until mayce Oct 10th before I can make reservations - thank goodness there is a convention I can go to in Orlando in mid Jan - I can use some of the points but I doubt all of them.

If we go the rent route, maybe I'll PM you.

BTW, DW is 5 days older than you. Hates thos combo Christmas/Birthday cars and presents.
