Renting rather than buying

David's regular price is $13, firesale prices that he sends out in e-mail blasts (last minute type things) range from $7-9 most of the time. So you do pay a premium to use his service.

Thanks for info.

from someone and was able to find that it was on there before I have the actual confirmation. That is a nice thing to be able to see. I found my owner on a different website but checked her posts on there, got references and emailed back and forth with one of her past renters, had my brother check to make sure the person actually existed (yes I am paranoid) and spoke to her on the phone. I also have a contract and only had to pay her 50% now, and 50% 60 days out. I also asked her to add something in her contract about my ability to get a FULL refund if there was default or cancellation on the part of the owner which she felt was fair. Most people in the world are good so I have to hope that she's one of them.

Back to this page showing the confirmation. Is there a way to link my dining reservations to that so it all shows up on the computer nicely when I schedule my ADR's?

Renting is very viable. A little more expensive for a given trip than owning if you were going routinely and as noted, there are risks and a reduction in flexibility. For the every few years trip it's likely a better option. Plus, as mentioned, owning a small contract and renting or getting points transferred in when needed, be be the best of both worlds. Don't forget that is' entirely possible to trade in through RCI as well. Also more uncertain and higher risk but much cheaper if successful. That too can be combined with a small ownership but it's really only feasible of you're flexible and/or can go off season and you plan at least around a year in advance. That's the basic approach I've taken for the past 8-9 years or so. Headed there next month with about 25 people staying at BCV & BWV using that approach.

It is possible, but seems to be very very unusual. I think we've only had two reports of rental fraud on DIS in the last many years---and both had red flags all over the place. One wanted the money by Western Union or some such thing, while the other was offering a Christmas week at $6/point, way too good of a price to be true. At the same time many many transactions are completed successfully each day. As long as you are doing your due diligence, the chances of something like this happening are probably negligible.

I agree that is unusual, but it has happened more than the two reports you mention and those instances have led to the changes in Rent/Trade board policies here on the DIS.

Due diligence is exactly what is needed, but many do not seem to heed that advice and could end up with some disappointment.

I still think that the chances are negligible---you have more of a chance of weather or some other unforeseen circumstance canceling your trip than an unscrupulous landlord. That is *provided* you are doing at least a modest amount of due diligence. I'm sure there are a few other instances that haven't been reported publicly---though that's a shame. If it's happening more often, it would be a service to let folks know. If you have links to situations other than those two reports I mentioned, I'd be interested in reading about them.
