are you able to ask the person you are renting from if they are willing to lower the price per point
or is that frowned upon

You can but most of them have a firm number based on what they are doing instead of using their points and the dues they have to pay on them.

Personally if I were renting points and they weren't distressed (needed to be used in a couple of months- I would probably only look at you as a last resort and reply to everyone else quicker if you were asking for a lower price. I would probably refuse to do any business with you if you asked for it after I had checked into availability with you. To be honest the price that points are usually rented at is more than fair to renters compared to Disney's prices and asking for more of a discount might send up a flag that you could be difficult to deal with as well.

Of course you can ask. But I agree with the previous poster that it would send up a red flag. I would run, not walk, away from a prospective renter who asks for a lower price. What is to stop them from agreeing to a rental with me, then finding someone else offering points for a dollar or 2 less per point and leaving me high and dry? Asking to pay less just screams that you are looking for the cheapest rental, period. :confused3

Just book a value resort for cash through Disney with a PIN if you can get one. You can ask a member if they will lower their point price, but do it up front in the very beginning and not after they look for an available reservation and you waste their time.

OP, take a look at the Rent/Trade board. You'll see a whole range of prices there, from $12/pp to about $6/pp. I would guess that the people renting for $6 are coming to the end of their use year, so they've got to get rid of the points quickly or risk losing them. We call 'em "distressed points" That's why they're willing to take so much less.

On the other hand, people who are renting for the top price per point are probably not under any pressure to rent the points quickly, so they're not very likely to be receptive to bargaining. The last time I rented my points out, someone tried to negotiate the price.....but I had 15 other PMs from people who were willing to pay my full price, so I politely turned her down.

What I would suggest is that you find a price range that would be acceptable to you, and look for owners who are advertising in that price range. I think that will work out a lot better than trying to negotiate price with an owner.

If you were thinking of renting through a broker, check out Dvc By Request. They have last minute specials, with reduced prices, for those distressed points I mentioned earlier.

Do note that distressed points can be difficult to use. Last minute bookings are sometimes hard to string together. You may not have much of a choice in resorts, or you may move, or you may end up in a room size you didn't want.

I agree that you can ask, but don't be at all surprised if members just drop you without replying or reply and move onto someone else. And do mention that you are negotiating price BEFORE the member does any work to see if what you want is available.
