Ok, I'm brand new to posting, even though I have been lurking for months, so bear with me...
I am interested in renting points for a 5 nt stay, then transferring to a moderate hotel for 5 nts(cash, obviously). This will probably be the only trip to WDW my family takes for a while (We're from CA. We have done DL 8 times and are finally making the WDW trip) and would like to try differnet hotels for a number of reasons. This solution makes the most sense financially, as renting points is the only way we would be able to afford a villa, then transferring to a moderate to experience another resort. I am thinking OKW, then transferring to POR. I feel like 10 nts is too long to be crammed into a hotel room at POR, but 10 nts at OKW is too expensive. Then the icing on the cake - does anyone know how I would be able to do this and get the DDP? I know I am asking for the moon, just thought I would ask.

So 3 questions -
1. Is renting points a viable option? What are the downsides?
2. Is transferring resorts not worth the hassle?
3. DDP?
Thanks to anyone who can help me! Any suggestions are welcome! :

Renting "points" is really renting a reservation from a DVC owner, it is certainly a viable option...but it involves a great deal of rust from bother the owner and the renter. The DVC owner always has control ofthe ressie and it can be cancelled at any time by the owner. The owner also has to trust the rener to make their payments according to their agreemets. You can post your dates and accomodation size on our rent/trade board and make private arrangements with an owner. Disney will not become involved in this transaction.

As far as the dining plan, yes, you can add it to the DVC portion of your stay...it will need to be added to the ressie by the owner. You will pay for the DDP whe you check into your DVC resort.

For the POR portion of your trip, those arrangement would need to be made through Disney Travel, or your travel agent, and you would need to purchase at least a one day park ticket through them to be able to add the DDP to that portion of your trip. Since you need to purchase a park ticket to get the DDP on the POR portion of your stay, you may want to consider doing that first and purchasing a 10 day hopper. You would continue using the Room Key Card from POR during your DVC portion of your stay for the park ticket only...and use the DVC room key for room charging, dining plan and your room key for that portion of your stay.

:rotfl: That's just a riot!

I believe you meant to say: a great deal of trust from both the owner and the renter. :)

Great idea! We also liked to switch resorts when we were coming from a great distance and take those long trips.

Otherwise....what Chuck said.

It just ocurred to me that you need to be careful about park tickets. It's easy when you are just staying in either POR or OKW. But, as Chuck said, you'll need to buy at least a one-day ticket, tied to the reservation, to get the meal plan for POR. So, you could end up paying more for tickets depending upon how you buy them. I.e. If you bought a 10 day MYW while at OKW and then checked into POR, you'd need to buy an additional 1 day MYW in order to get the dining plan. (I think) I'd also suggest avoiding buying 2 5-day passes because that is alot more than buying a 10-day pass.

Yes, that is what I meant :) Man I hate it when the battery runs down in my wireless keyboard. :lmao:

What size villa are you thinking of renting? If it is 1 BR or larger then I would second the stay at POR first and then OKW - You could do Tuesday-Sunday at POR and then Sunday through Friday at OKW. That way you are not paying for weekend points which can be much more expensive. Get your MYW tickets through your POR package and you're all set. Just be certain to use up your first five days of DDP by midnight of the checkout day for POR as you will have two DDP's and they will overlap a little. Just be sure to use the right room key that day. Good luck and have a great trip,

I would do it that way anyway, castleri - I'd rather go from a Value/Moderate to a DVC than the other way around. Of course, this depends on the OP being able to work out vacation time to arrive on a Tuesday. Spend five nights at a 'regular' Disney resort, then Sunday move over to OKW.
So, yes, Chuck S is (naturally ;)) correct - starting your stay at a non-DVC resort and purchasing the actual park passes you need on arrival makes a lot of sense. Even if the tickets expire 14 days from first use, the OP will be there ten nights. All set. Remember, your ticket purchase doesn't have to match the number of nights you stay in any given resort.

So can I purchase my 10 day tickets w/ DDP in conjunction with my 5 nt stay at POR? If that's the case, I 'm all set. I thought your tickets and hotel stay had to match. Am I wrong? I figured I was trying too hard to get the most for my money.
Also, by my calculations, a 5 nt stay at OKW in a 1 bdrm would run me 90 pts (Sun - Thurs) or $900 @ $10/pt. , just slightly more than my 5 nts at POR. Why don't more people take advantage of this? Is it just the risk of dealing with an owner, or is there another downside? And I'm not set on OKW. Anybody offering pros/cons vs. BWV would be helpful. I know the biggies; location, noise, restaurants.
Thanks to everyone for their input so far.

You would only get the DDP for 5 nights at POR and you would have to purchase it seperately for your 5 nights at OKW. If you do that, the person you rent from must make the request for the DDP, and you will pay for it when you arrive at the resort.

As to why don't more take advantage of this? The owner has to be willing to give up points for money, and many of us purchased our points to use them ourselves.

Keep in mind that you can't just call up somebody and ask for a reservation at $10/point and automatically get it. Points go for that rate when an owner needs to get rid of them in a hurry (often such points have narrow windows on when they can be used.)

If you are willing to wait around for a good price, you might get $10. But if you just want to go ahead and book on your timetabel, you either have to get lucky, or be willing to pay more than $10/point.

Payment and cancellation terms are different when you rent points.

You'll probably have to pay at least half when the reservation is made and the other half at least 60 days before your vacation. Some owners might want to be paid in full when the reservation is made. A few owners may take paypal but a bank check is typically required. You may need to make arrangements more than 7 months before your trip.

The owner may not offer any refund if you need to cancel or change your reservation. You may wind up having to re-rent your reservation at a loss if you need to cancel a few weeks before your trip.

There are owners that still rent at $10/point but many of them own at OKW. If you want BCV or BWV you might need to find an a DVC owner that owns there and book your reservation at least 7 months in advance. You might have to pay more than $10 point in those cases.
