Renting Points - Too risky?

As if the newbie owner/newbie renter I described above weren't bad enough, I've recently seen an even scarier scenario. I haven't seen it here (yet), because the folks are just gathering info, but I have seen it several times over on the DDP board.

This has GOT to be the ultimate Risky Business Scenario -- the newbie renter planning a family reunion using rented DVC accommodations!:scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

Take all of the angst threads we've ever read about OWNER's problems with our own relatives...and then add the ingredient of all of that in one rental. Or a series of rentals from multiple owners because no one owner had enough points (or better sense) to accommodate everyone.

I've seen the early warning signs of those catastrophes on the DDP board, with early planners trying to figure out how to satisfy Aunt Sally -- who can't make up her mind if she wants DDP or not, or wants it but doesn't want to pay for it, etc, etc, etc. They, of course, are telling her she can afford it because of all the money they're going to be saving by renting DVC. The possibilities ()are endless!

I wouldn't use my points for a family reunion, :scared1: between my sister and my in laws. I am sure not going to worry about renting points out to a gang that actually post a thread about not going to WDW because one small obnoxious 5 yr old didn't want to go.:sad2:

I've seen some of those threads too Jim (not on the DDP board, don't tend to stop there too often) and I ususally put in a soft word of warning - DVC point rental should be seen as a final transaction - if your flaky sister-in-law cancels on you, someone will be paying for her room.

But, we can expect more of that....Disney's Worst Kept Secret is nowadays is that renting points on the DIS can get you a Deluxe hotel at a Value rate!

As with any timeshare you don't actually OWN a piece of the hotel etc. Frankly I have rented points on numerous occasions because i have had to do it for financial reasons and because we couldn't afford to go to Disney as often as we would like. If you can finacial handle going to Disney every year or for some more than once a year God Blessed You. I do not know what all the fuss is about, if another member wants to rent points thats their business, and their risk no?
It's so touchy
We love Disney however I don't feel we are treated any better than any other guest. I've never been waiting on a line and went up to a cm and said I am a DVC member and they said well you get to go to the front of the line!!
I don't know seems we're all too quick to judge

In general I am against renting points but I have done it twice since the first of the year. I had an actual reservation that I rented out because my DH had major surgery and couldn't go. He wouldn't be able to travel for quite a while so I also rented out the points for the rest of this use year. Both times were to very nice, easy to deal with people.

I must have had at least 30 responses to my ad for point rental. I saw these same people respond to several ads on the rent/trade board, always for the same dates. They don't seem to understand that if one member can't make the reservation (popular time, 2 months out), neither can another. Can you imagine all the calls going into member services for the same person for the same reservation.

Heck I just made reservations for my parents and my brother and his family and I almost scared them off with my YOU BREAK IT YOU DIE YOU CANCEL YOU DIE.

But hey free is free so they are still coming :rotfl2:

No way I would rent out - it is bad enough dealing with family. I agree on the post that I wish we could rent our points back to CRO much easier for me.

And this is not meant for all renters but it does irritate me when I see the *gee should I stay at the All Stars or rent DVC* posts....
