I was wondering if anyone has experience renting points to stay at Poly and if so how hard is it to get a standard villa. It looks like there are only about 18? Seems like it would be hard to get.

At PVB, there are the following number of DVC Villas available:
288 Standard View Studios
72 Lake View Studios
12 Bungalows (basically a 2-bedroom villa)
Depends very heavily on time of year. We have rented points at PVB twice. I booked a Standard view studio for the week AFTER presidents day week in the 5 month window.

@erinsmom listed just the DVC rooms/villas. Disney's Polynesian Village Resort has 478 traditional hotel rooms, 6 suites in addition to the over-the-water bungalows and studio villas.
It depends on the time frame, but I would definitely try and do it before the 7 month window opens up.
We looked at renting POLY for March but bulked because it was still $400 a night and neither of our DDs wants to sleep on the pullout. LOL
That's a huge drawback of DVC rooms (except for OKW). Our DS was sooooo happy when we moved from AKV to POR during a split stay, because his bed was much more comfortable.
