so we are DVC owners and are short some points actually in my opinion quite a few points. How would renting points work if we wanted to use up what we have for the reservation and just rent what we are short. Would the rental still fall under another persons name even if part of it was using our points. We have never rented points before.

well if you can get them to transfer their points to you then you will be fine.

before the 7th month window - it has to be the points for the resort you will need.

after the 7th month you can rent from anyone with dvc points.

If you want to be able to combine someone else's points with your own, you would have to seek a transfer in to your account. Those points would then be in your control.

If you seek a rental reservation, you would have to book whole nights with the other owner and in that case, it would have to be linked with your other nights but it would remain under the owner's account.

So Is there a reason someone would not do a transfer first and for most or is there a limit on the amount of points one can transfer in? Can anyone tell me the downside to transfers?

I understand transfers are limited to once per year, so if it's only a few points, I don't see an owner willing to use their once per year transfer and only make $100.

that makes sense. I think when I'm ready I will be looking for more than a few close to a 100 point transfer.

You will easily be able to find a transfer for 100 points. Finding the UY and resort you need will be the challenge. Even with that challenge I think you will have good luck with it. I just transferred 100 points into my account. I looked for an owner, found an owner, paid for the points and had them in my account all in one day. Something I thought would take some time and research was all done quickly and easily.

Oh and by the way, if you know what you need, it's not too soon to start looking. I knew I was going to be short points for a January 2013 trip. You can bank any points you have transferred into your account (you can not borrow however).
