I am trying to plan a trip, and found out last night that you can rent DVC points...I seen a banner for Davids Disney Vacation Points Rental, and wonder if anyone here has used the service, and what your thoughts were?

Also,if anyone knows how it works?
details removed here
Anyways, does anyone know how exactly this point rental works?
Do I have to go a certain time for a number of days? Or can we go when we plan and stay how long or short we like?

I am so new to this,so any feedback is much welcomed!
Thanks!

I don't know about the particular renter you mention, but you can see other options on the Rent Points board. Different renters will have different ways of writing a contract and collecting payment, but you can find points to rent for any time of the year at any DVC resort, as long as there are rooms available.

Ok great! Thanks!

So users on here that rent points out, also use a contract?
I was going to go with his service,as I was worried that we would show up and have no room! I am sure if there is a contract involved, that wouldn't happen as it would be a legal issue then!

Thanks again!

There is something to be said for paying extra to get piece of mind :)

With that said, there are many folks on the Forum who have been renting for a LONG time and run it just as much like a business as David does. If you go to rent from forums... 1) rent from someone with a lot of posts and a lot of rental contracts that have been done. 2) Make sure they use a contract 3) Ask for referrences... or better yet, just look for people who rented from them and pm to ask how it went.

As far as David's service, we never actually used it, but I will say we looked into his service, and his website really does spell out to you how he does it... very clean and professional. I haven't heard any complaints about his service (not that someone may have been dissatisfied)

you request a reservation and the DVC owner calls to see if there is availability. (david is a broker who connects you to a DVC owner). just remember that disney has nothing to do with this process.

DVC is a timeshare - owners often book 10-11 months in advance to get what they want. if you ask about availability 4-5 months out there might not be much if anything available. a larger resort like SSR and OKW might be your only option, if that.

you can stay for 1 night or several weeks. just depends on what is available.

the other thing about DVC being a timeshare is that you do not get daily mousekeeping when booking through an owner. you may not get any sort of cancellation policy. studios except for OKW include 1 queen bed and 1 pullout sofabed - OKW studios have 2 queens.

it's getting a little dated but this thread is still a good place to start to learn more about renting from an owner:

ehh...are you really willing to take the time and money to go to court to enforce a contract? if not, then it offers no real protection.

the usefulness of a contract is in clarifying what is expected from both of you rather that letting assumptions run wild. for example, you might not be able to cancel at all - the contract is useful if it makes you aware of that so there are no surprises.

Since it hasn't been mentioned yet.....you are not renting points, you are renting a reservation from a DVC owner. They make the reservation and they have complete control of the reservation. The DVC owner will need to make all arrangements for you including Magical Express and the dining plan if you are interested in that. You will not be able to speak to anyone about the reservation, only the owner will be able to do that.

That being said, before owning ourselves, we rented from DVC owners and had wonderful luck and obviously wonderful experience since we purchased for ourselves!!!
