I'm looking to rent points, but the members have only 28 or less messages posted here. A little nervous, how do you guys see if these are legit? One quote was way low. We use to be DVC members and know all the ropes. Any help would be appreciated. TIA

Ps. I've rented twice on here from members and everything went 100% smoothly.

If it's something close/upcoming, you might want to check the various DVC rental agencies for their bargains :D

I would say ask for references, but I know those can be faked. Some people aren't active here.

If it's too good to be true, it usually is!

Lots of ppl are renting for the first time bc of expiring points; while I would be cautious, it’s not necessarily a big no-no imo.

You can ask that they make a reservation, check the reservation number to make sure it’s legit, and go from there? Just a suggestion.

You can also do a search on the OC Comptroller's website to verify their ownership.

Make sure to exchange contact information
Name
Email Address
Phone Number

If I were renting points, I would want to personally speak to the owner instead of carrying out all conversations via email.

Checking the OC comptroller’s website is an added layer of protection but there are scammers who will pose as an owner, using their name and the address on the deed that was filed. Just make sure that wherever you send payment matches the owner’s info.

Never pay in full until you have a reservation confirmation and have been able to successfully add it to MDE. Even then, you could get burned. One such scam is the “reselling” of reservations. The scammer offers points at a dirt cheap price. They don’t actually own DVC. Once they have a victim, they contact an actual owner and have them book a reservation for the victim. The scammer gets the confirmation info from the owner and relays it to the victim. Victim adds it to MDE and thinks all is well, so they send the money to the scammer. Scammer collects from victim. Scammer never pays the owner. Owner cancels reservation when payment is never received and scammer disappears. Victim is left high and dry.

It’s rare for scams to happen on the disboards due to the rules they have in place. Scammers can’t be bothered with creating an online persona for the amount of time it takes to post rentals for free. And it costs money to post rentals if you are not an active disboards member. They’re more likely to target FB and other message boards that don’t have the strict rules that are enforced here.

Let me explain why....

We are DVC owners. We WERE going to rent out 147 points, expiring 3-31-2021.

Then the lawsuits started. Rental company's that I won't mention had rumors of bankruptcy. Owners started getting hit. We BAILED on renting, as we do not need a personal lawsuit.

In our case? We DONATED our owned DVC points, that WDW was going to steal anyway, to a lovely family we know within driving distance of WDW :). No litigation, a great family is happy, and WDW does not get to steal our points. We are happy :).

Should we ever desire to Rent in the future? We will use a company homed in the United States, subject to US law. Just what WE intend to do...
