Renting Points December 2020

I get the sense that this December could be an even busier one due to pent up demand. Aside from the potential for the limitations with the parks, etc. I am curious on thoughts on renting points for a stay in December. Disney rack rates are high and I found some availability coupled with people being in a bind to rid points. Pretty good deal money wise but some unknowns...

I am having this same dilemma. Typically we would book with David's without question. Now, I'm thinking that we'll just go through Disney, even though we will have to stay at a value resort. We need to have that availability to cancel or reschedule later on.

I have also rented with David's several times in the past and always had great experiences. As long as covid is a concern, however, which is a certainty in December 2020 I would say because we could be in a 2nd wave, I would NOT enter a non refundable contract. The other issue is that December is DVC's high time AND all DVC members affected by the closures are having to cram into the next months, so availability will be especially limited. Normally DVC reservations are spread out over 12 months, but now that the parks have been closed several months, everyone has to use those points in a shorter window before they expire. I think you will find that renting points might be hard to do for a while, especially in DVC high seasons. My advice is to book directly with Disney. It is the safest thing to do at this point and will be the easiest thing to cancel or reschedule should something happen.

Yes I have checked availability and they do have a few openings that are of interest to me. I have used both main rental sites in the past and have been extremely happy. Was thinking of going the direct member route this time as it looks like people are lower price per point due to the potential for not being able to use at all. $15 or less/pp is a sweet deal for December for Poly or BCV. May have to take a flyer on it...

I would just make sure you understand the use year and expiration of the points that are being used to make the reservation. I would also explicitly spell out in the contract you use what happens if the resorts are closed during your stay. I would also confirm if the owner would be willing to reschedule if WDW is closed in December.

Cover your bases and get it in writing.

Just be aware to of the cancelation policy of the owner in case resorts are closed again,

Lots of issues right now for renters in losing money. Also, I am not sure where you checked, but true availability can only be done through the DVC member website, and it literally can change by the minute,

Dec is a very busy time, and with so many owners rescheduling trips, I have see things disappear in the time I adjusted dates.

Unless one is ready to book, availability now may not be there when you finally find an owner, It is one of the reasons we don’t allow members to share it on the DVC boards.

Just keep that in mind!

I don’t know where you are checking availability, but if you’re not an owner using the members website (which hasn’t exactly been running very reliably as of late), you’re not seeing real time availability. I would be very surprised if any studios are available for more than a night here or there in December at BCV. Maybe Poly.

I just rented points for this December at AKL. I would think that Disney can not stay closed for that long. The seller of the points said if we have to cancel we can use the points till may of 2021.

Excellent to hear. If you don't mind me asking where did you go through to find the points?

We went to the DVC owner / Rental Points on this Forum. It was so easy and had our reservation done within an hour. We have been waiting for 2 weeks with Davids to try and find points. We finally asked for our deposit back as we booked direct with owner.

I think it may be as normal by December as it’s going to be for a long time. If it helps, there’s lots of DVC rental availability in December. I was actually looking to book a trip with my own points and scrolling through the various months last night and was surprised at how “open” December was. It seems much more available than December usually is

I rented points with David’s for a trip this past November and the experience was great. Before Covid I was planning to rent again for Nov 2021 so would need to book in Dec 2020. With the new normal I’m not sure if I will rent again for 2021. I may pay a little more money and book through Disney just in case I need to cancel. Hopefully we will be back to our old normal in a year and a half but who knows?

May I ask which location did you try to get through David's?

There's more availability than I thought there would be for sure. The issue is the park reservations and the cancellation. You'd need to buy non-refundable tickets, probably right now, if that is even good enough to get what you want. And if you rent from a person, which is what I would do, that's a done deal, no refunds. So, a big commitment in a time like this.

Pop might not be as fancy, but at least you could cancel.
