Renting points as a test drive on a dvc purchase -- good idea?

...I'd be nervous about paying in full...
Risk = Reward

BTW, you can't get ripped off through the CRO.

I've been considering buying, and I've done lots of research with the help of the disboard here.
I think since you've never been to Disney that it would be fun and very cost effective to rent points at $10 a point and stay in studio units during Sun-'thurs during value season. That's $80 a night, cheaper than you could rent any studio unit. (8 points is for OKW...I guess the other resorts might be closer to $100 or even $120 a night in points.)

Take advantage of a tour of Saratoga Springs through Disney. And make sure you also take the time to enjoy all that DisWorld has to offer you and the kids.

And THEN, if you decide to buy...you can make an informed decision. The cost of the rental will be no more really, than the cost of maintenance and closing costs should you have bought before renting.

As to the risks...most people here on the Disboard are so open and trustworthy. If you pay by Paypal and put it on your credit card through Pay pal...it seems that you would be adequately protected.

The difference that I 've noted between Disney and other timeshares are in the resale value remaining very high at Disney. You could buy a Westgate that is selling through Westgate at $20,000 for only $2000!!!!!!. But Disney resales aren't all that much savings over Disney proper when you factor in the extra 10 years...unless you are talking about buying a LOT of points.

I'm looking for 100 -150 points and that will be plenty for my use. I may save $1000 on a resale but give up the 10 extra years and financing. The decision of whether it is best for me...or for you...is completely personal. But all things being equal....if you can SEE all the home resorts before you buy, it will inspire confidence in your decision.

Hope that helps your perspective some!

RUN AWAY!RUN AWAY!
You'll get there, you'll love it, you'll sign on the dotted line..Soon you'll be trying to add on points, squeezing in extra trips since you have those Annual Passes, cruising the DVC boards for a quick fix..
Everyone says it won't happen to them-- just one little DVC trip on rented points...
Next thing you know, you're jonesing for the timeshare resale list to come out, waiting for Southwest to release its flights, and scanning the rent/trade board for just one more little trip this year...
We did it, and look at us now! Oh yeah-- and you'll be SO HAPPY!

Great messages everybody. Thanks so much. We closed our eyes, plugged our nose and jumped yesterday. Got 8 nights in a studio at Wilderness Lodge from a guy who seems like a great seller. Will know for sure at the end of February, but feeling good. Thanks again for all the good advice. This may be the beginning of something.

Just wanted to say that renting a studio really won't help to make the kind of impression you are hoping to make on DH. While you are there try to talk him into a tour of DVC. When he gets a look at the 1 and 2BR units that will clinch the deal for you.

Well roadtripper, you hit the nail on the head.

We just returned from our first ever trip to WDW. Eight nights at VWL in a studio. Went to the open house at SSR on day 3. Signed a contract on Day 5. Upgraded 7-day park hopper to an annual pass on Day 6. Today I spent an hour looking at JetBlue and Southwest websites for flights back next January.

Watch out...lots of questions coming. But, it's good to be home.

Wow, there's a whole story in this thread!

Welcome Home, jhmommy!
