Sorry if this is a repeat! Is it worthwhile to rent out points? How successful have you been? Do people rent often? How much work does it require?

I am thinking about buying more points but I may not use them all of the time. Any general info would be great! Thanks!

There are limitations to renting out. look in your hand book for 2008-2009 page 11 for detail on this. Headline reads "RENTING VACATION POINTS RESTRICTION".
Hope this helps you ;)

Unless you have someone who can regularly use those extra points you are going to buy, why bother with them at all?

There are a few horror stories out there from less experienced owners who rented reservations to non-members.

Personally, I wouldn't want to bother with the hassle of making reservations for complete strangers, worrying whether or not the payment would arrive.

Plus, you may have to declare this as income depending upon your situation.

Despite what many on these boards -- and possibly even Disney themselves -- might lead you to believe, the option to rent your interest is an important component of most any real estate purchase and DVC is no exception.

You may find more helpful information elsewhere on the internet as the attitude here on the DIS has trended anti-rental as of late.

Renting points is a viable option when you have extra points. It is relatively straightforward and simple to do although it will take a little planning on your part. The horror stories are few and far between- don't let them scare you away. For the most part, this is a simple transaction. We have done it a number of times and it has been great for both parties.

Please forgive this opinion from a non-DVC owner. I have rented points once and it was wonderful - obviously takes trust on both ends. everytime I try to rent points it seems like there is more demand for renters than rentees - I am sure there are risks - but does not seem to be problem overall

Thanks for allowing my opinion

i wasnt trying to put a damper on things with my previous post. just wanted you to be aware of the limitations on this.

We have rented out points several times before and never had a problem.
you can pm me if you want more info. :thumbsup2

Some people find renting their points to be a real hassle. They get renters who need a lot of handholding, or don't pay on time, or want to switch. They sift through hundreds of responses to their "points for rent" posts responding to people who want a bargain above and beyond what they are willing to give. Sometimes they show up here with wails of "never again." Very occationally, they end up holding the bag - and the bag is empty.

Other people have it down to a fairly simple science. Sometimes they share what they do here to make it work in an effective manner.

Then there are others, they ENJOY the process of renting points, helping someone else create a magical vacation - if they are covering their costs, the effort itself is a labor of love - or at least an enjoyable hobby.

Financially, it isn't a good investment in money/time - at least not at the going rate here. You'll break even, but there are better uses for your money and time. But if you have extra points to rent....

Personally, I'd be more likely to suppliment the points I own by renting points from others and transferring them into my account than own more points than I generally need. But to me, any hassle in renting points is too much hassle. However, when we "overvacation" for our points, we pay cash at the CRO resorts, revisiting old favorites, and that has worked very well for us.

You can easily transfer your points to another DVC owner via the rent/trade board here. This is very little work. While people have gotten "ripped off" on the rent/trade board here, it is rare.

You can get a higher rate by renting out through, say, Redweek, than by offering points for transfer here. This is much much more work, though. I've tried it, and got mostly people asking for rooms at the last minute when nothing was available, got tons of people who didn't understand why weekends cost more than weekdays, got people who asked tons of questions and then were shocked if I asked for, say, $180 a night for a room (they obviously hadn't priced Disney deluxe rooms anytime recently, or probably ever), etc.

So, I think renting out your points as a back-up would be fine. I wouldn't suggest buying more points if you thought you'd mostly be renting them out; renting points transferred into your account when you needed them would be better.

If youu are interested in a Disney cruise, you will find that it requires a lot of points. You can save a lot over the cost of using points by transferring or renting the points and then using cash for the cruise reservation.

That is exactly what I did and it worked out great. Paid for the cruise and actually paid for the initial deposit I made to purchase DVC. Yes, it was a little work, but for me the satisfaction I got from the first time Disney vacationer more then out weighed the work it took.

To answer your question, I think so.

So can anyone explain how the renting points work on the side of the renter? I am renting for the first time this December and have already completed the deal. I am just wondering how it will be staying as a renter? Will I know the difference as a regular resort guest? We have made DW our annual family vacation for the last 3 years and was encouraged to try renting the next time we went. We are also considering purchasing ourselves.

You will not be treated any different. Have a good trip. I rented before I bought. Take your confirmation with you for check in, the CM will take it from there.

You won't be treated any differently than any other Disney resort guest. But you are not entitled to DVC discounts and perks since you are not the member.

But you won't get daily housekeeping unless you pay for it.

Do you have any idea how much the housekeeping is? If you don't pay the extra, do you get anything at all during a one week stay? Sorry for so many questions this is all very new to me and I am very curious:)

Wow Kim, who did you rent from. Was she honest? LOL!!:cloud9:

When you stay one week, on Day 4 (check in day is Day1), you will receive a "Trash & Towel" service. That's pretty much what it sounds like - your trash is taken away and your used towels exchanged for fresh ones. You do not have to be in the room for the service.

Most members find that they like not having housekeepers in their room - for us, making the bed is no big deal and we don't use a fresh towel every day at home. If you want more towels, you may request more and pay and add'l $6 per pack. A pack is 4 bath towels, 4 face cloths, 2 hand towels and 1 bath mat. If you are staying in a 1 bedroom or larger unit there is a washer and dryer in the room.

Enjoy your trip -
