Renting Out Points Question

I have noticed on certain rental websites recently when renting out points it costs buyers $17-18 per point. However, when you search on these rental boards, owners are often listing their points for roughly in the $15 range.

How come we as owners haven't caught up to these rental websites as they had no problem raising to the current rental rates? I tried using some of these websites prior to becoming an owner and almost every time I had to go onto a waitlist waiting for an owner to supply the website with points. It left me losing out on my preferred dates many times when my trip reached the 7th month mark.

Moral of the story, it seems to me renting through the forums was always a great experience. So why don't more owners charge a little more being we can secure the vacation almost immediately?

I think it depends on the resort being listed for rental some resorts are easier to rent points than others so demand a higher payment. While others are more difficult so less. I think the rental agency tend to be flat because it’s easier for their end consumers to pick and chose. While on the boards here the renters need to be more savvy on their pricing because the those looking to rent are more knowledgeable about what they are worth (and more risk is involved so it needs to be cheaper).

Also, the Rental Website are only giving the owners with the points $14-$15, but some recently have gone up to $17, I believe.

Usually, when points are being sold for $15 or less, it's because the owners are getting towards the end of the UY, and need to get rid of them.

I've sold points for $10, with only a few weeks left in my UY within 2 hours of listing on Disboards to people who live around Orlando. But usually only SSR is availible. It is a win/win for both the owners and renters.

I would rather do a less expensive transfer than worry about a skittish renter because I can't randomly make calls to MS whenever the renter wants to change a part of the reservation or the dates or the location.

My analogy is that it’s like buying a used car. Buying one from a dealer is like renting points from a broker; quick and easy, but more expensive. Renting points from a private individual might save you some money, just like buying a used car from someone in the classifieds, but it’s more work and maybe a bit riskier.

As an owner who has rented out a lot of points, I will only use a broker for peace of mind. If the renter damages the villa, leaves an unpaid balance, or asks for an upgrade at checkin using my points, I have someone to call to help me recover. If I rented out the points myself, I am totally on my own.

It makes me feel better knowing there is another party involved in the renting process with me. I am willing to take less money from the rental for that.

I have rented my points from anywhere between $18-21 per points. I agree I takes a lot longer but it’s doable. A more difficult or hard to come by reservation imo justify a higher price per point whereas points which can be used freely as the renters see fit justify a lower price.

Renters will still save 50% or more by paying $20 - this is not the case for the entire year or when Disney is giving away free dining.

As others have mentioned it also depends on the resort. Ssr won’t yield $18-21 per point.

Another thing to consider is what the owner paid for the points. My points directly from Disney averaged $53.50 pp back in the early 1990s, so basically, even figuring $7.23pp dues, I can come out slightly ahead even at $10 pp for a rental, in a pinch.

I think this was the point I was also trying to make. The fact that the cash rates are outrageously high, even renting at $20 a point would make a huge savings for someone trying to rent and stay at a deluxe Disney resort.

Also with the yearly dues rising so much recently, I guess I’m just surprised more owners don’t charge more. However, I totally understand the convenience of getting rid of them quicker by charging less, and also peace of mind using a broker.

I agree as you most likely already have broken even then it doesn’t matter as much if you get one or the other price.

Still getting over the fact that direct points were $53pp in early 90’s. Granted, I was likely in or just out of college and kids were last thing on my mind, but what an amazing price. Now it’s almost $200pp!

Not only that, we got free park passes until 2000, for 1/2 the sleeping capacity of the room.
