I just rented out 300 of my points! We wanted to go on a 3 night cruise and stay in a family room so we could have the verandah. That would have taken 610 points-ouch! So I rented out 300 points, made $3000 and booked the cruise online. I actually ended up making $6 and saving 310 points. I am so grateful to those who suggested I do this. The whole process was very painless and I am going on the Disney cruise!!

Congrats , have a great cruise

Thanks! I can hardly wait and it is still 11 months away...

Congrats, just think how excited the renters are to get the use of your points!

We have rented points twice in the past (we are not disney members). We just returned from 5 nights at Beach Club Villas, two bedroom villa. It is such a great deal for us renters. It is nice to hear that it is good for the member as well! :thumbsup2

It is great that you had a good experience renting your points. Potential renters should understand that you really did not make a $6 profit on your points. You own a prepaid vacation plan since at the end of the term the resort goes back to Disney. So if you figure up front costs of your points since you no longer have one year of points plus the annual dues plus the mortgage interest on those points then you are probably lucky to make $1-2 per point. Under the F & F promotion your up front cost was probably $1.70 plus dues are 3.9802. Your cost before mortgage interest is $5.68. If you have a mortgage then your mortgage interest probably adds at least $4 per point to the cost. If you have no mortgage then the lost income on the up front payment if you put the money in a CD. Then lets not forget Uncle Sams cut. The reason that I am posting is because a lot of sellers do not realize their true costs and a lot of renters want lower prices since they think that renters make a lot off selling the points. To me the renters who save 20-60% off the rack rates are getting a lot better deal than the seller of points.

Right, we have 300 points which we are financing... our dues were 1200 so it roughly costs us about $4800 a year to own disney. If we rent it out for $3000 we really haven't made any money.

I think it's a Great deal for the renter. Looking back now if I had to do it all over again, I would have just rented points and that way I would always get availability at the resort I wanted to go. Now I own at SSR and I am really ONLY guaranteed there.

Good Points Plutofan.

Congrats on getting your cruise.

I too am interested in renting out my points. When you say painless, how easy was it? Did you use a rental agreement and how did you "advertise " your points? Did you just offer them or make a specific reservation?

thanks

Of course. I just ended up making $6 more than the cruise actually cost me!

You may already know this but you get the best cash discount for a cruise by going with a travel agent and booking early. The agent we used specializes in Disney only vacations and gave us the same price as a major travel agent and we got up to a $200 per room cash rebate once we complete our cruise in July 2007.

I seldom part with our points for reasons other than sharing with friends or family. I've had surplus to rent just twice. I've found it more enjoyable, and less of a hasle to look at the request for points on the rent/trade board and respond to the ones your home resort and available points best fits. Saves alot of back and forth from folks wanting to rent a portion of what you have, short time horizons, etc.
