Renting large SUV's

I don't know if they rent them, but my Honda Pilot seats 8 officially, and comfortably. Although you'd have to put big luggage on the roof.

Some Durango's (including ours) seat 8 because there is a bench seat in the front. But, really, it is so tight that you would only be able to fit someone small like a child, who you wouldn't want in the front seat anyway. So, the 8th seat really serves no purpose. Also, with that many people, there is hardly any room for luggage.

...because upon arrival, 2 adults and 4 kids will take a one-way limo ride to the hotel (a special surprise for the children as well as helping us get there without getting lost) with one husband driving/following in an economy car and one husband driving/following in the large SUV.

Going back we can take 4 in each vehicle and have the luggage between the 2 vehicles. I just wanted all 8 of us in the large SUV when we are going from place to place during vacation. I figured this should alleviate anyone having to worry about following, missing the light etc.

I look at L & M car rental and they have Chevy Astro vans that seat 8 for $460/week. I have a coworker that rented from them and were ok in that instance. The also have Mitsubishi Outlanders but they only seat 5.

We have gotten Durango's twice from Dollar (complimentary upgrades both times) and both times they seated 8...I am no expert on SUV's, but there were definately 3 seatbelts in the middle and rear seats. The center seat would be kind of tight for 3 adults IMHO....but a couple of kids and an adult would be OK....especially since you won't be riding long distances,
We rented a Durango over New Years. I did have seating for 8 (but I agree it would be tight). It did not have much luggage room, we had 5 people with a regular size carry on bag for each person. We needed to use half of the rear seat plus the whole back storage space to get out luggage in.

I'd check into a large passenger van as well. It just seems as though there is too much variability with large SUVs. I know I saw Astros at National (they seat 8) and probably Alamo has them as well.

Alamo also has a Chevy Express van which they list as holding 10 adults and 5 children. The weekly rate is $370.

I just rented a Ford Expedition from Hertz last week. This is what we drive at home so I am use to having the room. Ford makes an Expedition that seats 8 but it is the less expensive model that has a bench seat in front. The ones that they rent have the center console so it seats 7 but not much room for more than many be two bags if you have people in all the seats.

Ford does have an Explorer that seats 7 but the rentals do not have the 3rd row seat so they only seat 5. Even if you could get an Explorer with the 3rd row there is no room left behind the 3rd row seat.

To seat 8 you will need a van Excursion (or similar) or two cars.

We are again renting an Expedition for our Maui trip and the total for the 10 days is $965 and don’t do the prepaid gas, there is a flat rate of $65 for SUVs through Hertz.

Aloha

Steve
