Renting DVC points

Deb and Bill have you ever done this?
We are owners and don't rent out our points. We have purchased our tickets from Undercover Tourist (and used tickets from our CM son). But we only did the dining plan once, when they first offered it to DVC members for points stays. It was a lot cheaper, included tip and appetizer (like I said, a long time ago). But if you want to add the dining plan to a DVC rental, you have to pay for the plan when you add it.

That is so sad . . . because I'd definitely rent points from you guys!!!!

Yeah, that whole giving out your CC and security code thing freaks me out!

What some people do is get a Disney gift card, and give that number to the member to pay for the dining plan. And I might be wrong about this, but I think some credit card companies will give you a one-time-use number to use for a transaction, so the member wouldn't see your real credit card number.

The CC is only for dining plan, right? We did our first private points rental earlier this year and it went so smoothly. We had a 2BR LV at BLT that would have cost double the price we paid. I am going to rent points again this summer, and have already bought trip insurance online.

Yes, it's only for the dining plan, because the member who makes your reservation for you is the one who has to call DVC Member Services and add the dining plan.

Member Services doesn't sell tickets, so the member wouldn't be doing that for you. If you're renting from DVC by Request, you can purchase tickets through them, or from Disney directly, or from an authorized ticket reseller like Undercover Tickets.

Davids said we can use a gift card.

Thank you all for your input.

Why is it that when u buy the Dining Plan through David's it doesn't show on My Disney Experience that you have the Dining Plan? Thanks for your help!

From my email when I added the dining plan with Davids DVC. I have only copied the part that applies.
I would venture to say because it is under rented points, the dining plan is tied to the points and not to the person renting the points.

"Please be aware that Disney Vacation Club dining plans are not visible through the My Disney Experience site. However, for your convenience, I have included a screen shot from the Disney Vacation Club member’s confirmation showing that the dining plan has been attached to your reservation:"

and

"Even though the dining plan is not visible through the My Disney Experience site you are able to make all of your advanced dining reservations through your My Disney Experience account or by calling into the Advanced Dining Reservations number (whichever way you prefer). "

Can someone explain what kind of insurance you got to cover point rental? Can you only get insurance if it's through a rental company (vs a private owner?) I usually book last minute but this time we're looking to book at 11 months and it's making me nervous to book that far ahead!

I book real travel insurance that covers the entire trip. We have had great success using AIG Travelguard. You can pick and choose the type of coverage but make sure you are covered for all contingencies. I am not sure they have "cancel for any reason" at AIG.

I looked at the insurance offered by the point rental company we used and decided an overall policy was the better deal. The rental company insurance had a sliding scale where the closer to you got to check date the less you got back if you cancelled.

Booking that far in advance is the risk one incurs for getting the rooms so cheap.

We used DVC Rental Store this past September - I started looking into renting points in November of 2015 and DVC rental store got me into what I wanted in December - VGF studio lake view. Everything was seamless through them.

If you have not already done so, consider using the DIS DVC rental site to rent points directly from a member. We have rented points on this site for years, and have never had a bad transaction or a problem with a member renting them. The advantage is that you can usually get the points you need a a lesser price, and of course you can still use one of the trip insurance policies.

That's what I was curious about. I've always rented from individuals on this site (or a different site depending on who responds!) however I never thought I could get insurance for something I've "purchased" from an individual. I figured I could only get travel insurance on something from a travel company - like a brokerage. How do you know for a fact that this is covered?

The best way to answer that is for you to contact the insurer of your choice and ask. I am not sure who our renters used, but know that a couple did tell me they had travel insurance in case they were unable to make the reservation -- for the reasons allowed by the insurer, of course. However, both parties completed their trips, so they didn't have to use the protection.

I did it for the first time through David's last month and it was great! I highly recommend it!

Notrub98 - when you used David's, how did you pay for dining?

When I did it this year, I called the number David's provides and gave my credit card.
From Davids website:
"In order to process your request for the dining plan, we will need to get your credit card information from you and pass it along to the member so they can have Member Services process the payment.

DO NOT send information through e-mail. It is not secure.

Please call us at 800-610-5791 so that we may take this information in confidentiality from you. We will then contact the member and have them process the request for you.

If you are not comfortable providing your credit card information to the member holding your reservation, you will need to purchase a Disney Gift Card. For the ease of our members we request that you purchase no more than 6 Disney gift cards per dining plan."
