Has anyone here rented DVC points?
How does that work?
Who do you contact?

Do you get magic bands, extended magic hours, etc?

I read it costs extra for mouse keeping. Are there washers and dryers in the units for washing towels?

Here is a good explanation of renting points: http://www.disboards.com/threads/an-explanation-of-renting-points.3435083/#post-54162793

You can either use an agency (David's is a sponsor of the DIS), or a private owner via a board like the DVC Rent/Trade Board.

You get Magic Bands, EMH, etc. You do NOT get any additional discounts offered by Disney.
It does cost extra to get housekeeping - daily housekeeping is an additional $30-75/day.

There are W/D in 1BR, 2BR and grand villas. There are laundry rooms for those in studios to use.

Do a lot of research. Most DVC rental transactions are final, and you are limited in how much you can change a reservation (or cancel it). It needs to be booked 7-11 months in advance of your trip. It generally needs to be paid significantly up front. These can all be issues for some people that make DVC rental unattractive or impossible.

Before becoming owners we rented twice through someone we found her on the DIS, then purchased for ourselves. Since becoming members we have rented out as well, which we went through Davids. You aren't really renting points (we just refer to it as that). You are actually renting a DVC reservation. The owner owns the reservation, so trust and comfort with who you are working with is huge. The owner makes the reservation and will add on Magical Express and the Dining Plan for you. If you choose the dining plan, You will pay for it directly to the owner and will need to be done at least 48 hours before check in. As mentioned above you will need to pay extra for daily mousekeeping, but you will receive a trash/towel day and a full service day, depending on your length of stay.

You will not have access to Top of the World or access to store/restaurant discounts (just as auroraborealis mentioned).

Renting points requires trust and a firm commitment You need to be firm in your dates as it is usually not possible to cancel for a refund or change dates. The owner owns the reservation until you check in. Disney will not even talk to you.

yes - several times. It is the best way to go for the price. You do get a magic band because you still have to order tickets. Never had an issue renting points.

We are "renting" DVC points for the first time for our upcoming trip. So far the only downside was needing to book 11 months in advance in order to get the dates we wanted.

Magic Bands have nothing to do with ticket purchase. Magic Bands are issued because they are used as keys at all Disney resorts.
If you stay off-site, you buy tickets to the parks but do NOT get a Magic Band. You get a ticket card.

Do you go through the owners to purchase tickets or just the dining plan?
Just the dining plan. Owners cannot buy tickets for you using DVC discounts.

DVC doesn't sell tickets, so the owner can't get them for you. If you're renting directly from an owner, you can get them from Disney's site, or at your resort or a park, or through one of the ticket resellers. If you'll be going through a broker for your rental, at least some of them also sell tickets. I know David's does.

You can link the tickets to the MBs. The studio category is the main category that saves $ over the standard room rates, once you go to 1 bdrm and higher the points needed doubles or more. Studio's and 1 Bdrms have only 1 real bed (except for OKW) and then a pullout sofa etc. I would look at the DVC information board and read up on it to get all the facts. Good luck with your decision and have a great trip.

We just came back from a BLT vacation renting points from a private owner. It was about half the cost of renting through Disney, and the only things we gave up were daily housekeeping (i think they came 1-2x over our 8-night stay), and a little convenience because it had to be booked as a split stay (ended up learning at first check in that we wouldn't have to move). Would totally do again if we found the right inventory.

We have rented points through several companies. It's a great deal! Better than buying DVC for us since it costs less.
