Renting DVC Points?

Can anyone tell me how this works? Approx cost for a Sept trip? (this is not going to be for 2 years but the sooner I can figure out what I"m doing the better to save!)
I'm planning a surprise family trip to disney in 2008 (will present to the family Xmas 2007)...
I assumed we'd do a value resort but ... someone mentioned this option on another board. I'd love all the info I can get!

There is a forum on the DIS boards where DVC owners can post their points for rent, or you could post the points you need. We haven't done it yet but are considering it for our next trip. As I understand it, you usually pay approximately $9-10/point. On the DVC boards they have links to the rate schedules for each resort. When I've priced it out, a DVC studio on rented points is comparable in price to a room in a moderate resort.

Good luck!

a point cost a dvc member right at $11.50 per year to "own".

I think unless you find an unimformed owner, or an owner who is in pinch and needs to give pts away at the last min, you will find that fair mkt value of renting pts, will be a price that is 80% of what Disney would charge you for a stay in the same room.

In other words if you rent at fair value from a DVC owner, you will save 20% on your lodging. Quite a deal, if you ask me.......

You don't actually "rent points". What you do is pay a member to use their points to make a reservation in your name. For a rough idea as to cost, take a look at http://***********/Points/2006/vwl.shtml to see how many points you will need (it only goes through 2007 but points per night should be about the same in 2008 - just adjust the dates for holidays). What you will pay per point depends upon what you can negotiate from a member. Market price has been stuck at close to $10/point for a while now. Some people pay more, some pay less. But I'd figure $12/point for your budgeting. Keep in mind that there is no tax on this transaction, so a rental at $333/night is about about the same as getting a hotel for $299/night.

The good news is, you can get a very nice room this way for less than Disney would charge. But keep in mind the drawbacks.

1. This is a private transaction that invovles your sending lots of money to a private citizen, and them being responsible if you damage DVC's property. Trust is needed on both sides.

2. You need to plan far ahead, as some of the resorts are small and getting a reservation can be tricky. Ideally you want to be making a reservation at least 7 months ahead of time; 11 months is even better.

3. Going through DVC, you don't get full maid service for your room.

Hmmm. The DIS doesn't like that link. How about this one http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-vacation-club/DVCpoints.shtml

so a rental at $333/night is about about the same as getting a hotel for $299/night.

wow, i never even thought of the tax savings.

Hi again!!!

OKW studio is 8 points -so 2 studios will be 16 points

so $160 (at $10 a point) to $224 (at $14 a point)

a studio rents for $269 plus tax $300 per night on WDW site NOW.

with a 6% increase each year by 2008 the room rate will be $302 and with taxes $337 - this is ONE studio - you will need two.

so $674 going through Dis (CRO) vs $224 using a DVC member - see it is a good bargin....

now this is just if OKW are still 8 points a night - but I can't see them changing.

So someone can rent points from a dvc member @ 14 dollars per point and stay in a $150 dollar per night room, for 112 dollars?

That's a savings of 25%, that is quite a discount.

It would seem any price under $18.75 per pt is saving the renter money.

It has been well established that the "break even" point on pts for the DVC owner is $11.50+, so if we take the mid point of $11.50 and $18.75 (in this example), a fair price (the mid point) would be $15.12 per point.

YEP!!!! $15.12 per point sounds good to me and VERY FAIR!!!!!

Hmmm.

Let's look at a weekend in mid-April. Standard Room at Wilderness Lodge will be $299/night, or $333 with taxes. Now we are being generous here and assuming we pay rack rate for that room - no discounts or anything.

Let's compare that to a stay at VWL. A studio is a pretty fair comparison. The room has about 10 extra sq feet over a WL room and has a microwave, but you have to balance that against WL having two real beds and full housekeeping services. Rate chart says - 43 points/night. Again, we'll be generous and say there is no "cost" for all the trust issues and hassle of renting.

$333/43 = $7.75 being the comparative value price. If we take the well established :rolleyes1 cost of points of $11.50 that makes the fair price (mid-point) to be $9.67.

Heck, $10 is a great deal for the DVC owner!

* Before anyone decides to pick apart my example, keep in mind the point isn't to establish a fair price for points, but to point out that you can pick your data and get just about any answer you want.

how many pts do you own that you rent out for 10 dollars?

I choose to discuss the days (sun-thur) that make up 70% of the week.

Why did you choose the 2 days that make up only 30% of the week?

:offtopic:

the op wants information on Sept.....

sept is in the value season at the DVC resorts. So yes it is a bargin...

Now Oct, Nov is a bigger bargin....because the WDW resorts see this time as regular season - but they are just a couple of points more (studios aren't any more) for a 1-bedroom and up....

yes I forgot to mention here - but I did mention before my figures on based only on Sun-thurs....

not fri/sat - I tell people not to rent fri/sat - I don't think they are worth it.

My family (6 of us) are going Apr 23-28 to BWV. We are "renting" points from someone on this board that had answered a request for points for our time period. Because we are a family of 6 we are staying at a 2bdrm Villa for $11/point. The total points needed for this stay (preferred room) is 200 points so do the math $2200. I think that this is fair in my opinon because of the circumstances with 6 of us. There is my girlfriend who has 4 children (16 & 15 daughters and 10 & 7 boys). We have stayed at All-Star Sports (Apr. 2003) needing 2 rooms and there was nothing wrong with that but I think that now that the girls are older we all need a little more space. The location of BWV is also appealing to the girls because there is more "action" there for them.

There are a few drawbacks to "renting". The first I will have to agree is the trust factor. You must be able to trust someone who you have never met because you are sending them money before you go and hope that they don't screw you over. But they must also trust you because essentially you are guests of the DVC owner. Another drawback is that to stay on weekends you require more points. We are flying in on Apr 22 and staying at POP in 2 rooms and then we will check out and have our bags shipped over to BWV (hopefully not a problem). We are also flying home on Apr 29 so back to POP for the night.

On the plus side you are staying at a Deluxe resort. You are definately saving money as opposed to booking a Deluxe room through Disney. You can "try out" a DVC if you are interested in purchasing. With our 2bdrm we have a kitchen so the wasted money that we have spent on breakfasts over the years should not be too bad as we can fix something up that I know the kids will eat. Another one is that, I think some people have overlooked, the fact that some DVC rooms have a washer and dryer so packing is not a problem, we can pack less because we can wash our things.

So you can draw your own conclusions but I think that it may not be the greatest deal but it is definately one to consider. We considered it and hopefully it will be great.

Great point. When you rent DVC points you are staying at WDW's best resorts. If $ is the only factor, you can find better "deals" by not renting DVC points. No doubt about that........

I am curious what would those days have cost if you paid cash?

heck, I'll call...........

hold on!

BWV is full. Here is what the BCV cost for that same time frame

Wow that is a great deal! Then, I assume, park tkts and adding dining plan are additional....
so with DVC you clean your own bedding etc? Bring your own bedding too? and towels?

Park tickets and dining plan are not included. The 2bdrm Villa at BWV comes fully furnished with even pots and pans. Sorry I only know about the 2bdrm because it was the only one that I looked at. I know that there is a fully detailed description of what is in the room on some website, I just can't remeber which one it is.
The housekeeping issue is a relatively small one for me. I know that they clean the room before we check-in as per usual. At home how many times in 5 days do you fully clean your bathroom, bed sheets, vacuum, etc... I guess that was my thinking.

I know that for an additional $ there is housekeeping but with my above statements we are not having housekeeping.

Oh!! I forgot I do get a change of towels half-way through our stay.

We call DVC our Home Away from Home, so it has a lot of the aspects of home, but still away from home. We make our bed every morning at home, so we do the same at DVC. They provide bedding, pillows, towels, plus all the kitchen items. You provide the food and the guests. You can get extra cleanings by paying extra. They'll change out your towels about every four days. If you stay long enough, you'll get a full cleaning, too.

2008 is still a long way off, so things could change before them. You might keep looking at these boards and see what's happening. About 1 year ahead of your date, you'll want to get with a member to see what they can get you. If you want a specific resort, it sometimes pays to get a member with that resort as their home resort.

Good luck with your vacation.

One thing to watch out for when renting, you can get hooked. We did and now own at BWV.
