Is anyone planning to rent or currently have a rental reservation? When do you start looking? When are you going? And where do you stay? How much per point do you pay? We always rent in the off season but now that DD is starting school, we have to go by her schedule. We were looking at February break. Is it more expensive then? Are we better of doing what we usually do and rent in January? But the she would miss school. How bad is it for her to miss a week of kindergarden in Catholic school?

Is anyone planning to rent or currently have a rental reservation?

i rented several years ago and stayed at SSR. i'm happier when i control the reservation, so i bought my own DVC contract.

When do you start looking?

DVC owners can book 11 months out at their home resort and 7 months out at any DVC resort, subject to availability. if they wait till the last minute and can't find anything available, they risk losing their pts for no value.

if you have strong preferences (like to stay at BCV for access to stormalong bay and a short walk to epcot...or AKV in a club level villa) then you should start lining up a reservation a year in advance.

if you don't care where you stay, OKW and SSR are fairly large resorts that usually have availability by 6-7 months out.

when i tried to rent the first time, i was only 4 months or so from my reservation date and DVC owners tended not to respond to my requests as pretty much everything had been booked by then. so DVC can be tough to book on short notice.

When are you going? And where do you stay?

DVC rentals are only good for stays at DVC resorts. not for stays at the poly or POFQ or whatever.

How much per point do you pay?

you can contact a broker like david and pay $13 per pt, or try to connect with a DVC owner on your own by using the rent/trade board forum for whatever terms and rates the individual is offering.

here is a link to the point charts for reference:

I have rented from a company (DiS boards won't let me post the info, pm me if you want it) and paid anywhere between $12 a point (their normal rate) and $10 or $8 a point when they got points at the last second and were going to expire in a short time frame.

We stay at The animal kingdom lodge and have done both a studio and a 2 bedroom.

The sooner the better I think, but you have to consider what their policy is on cancelations, since they differ than regular cash reservations.

We stayed on rented points in June. We wanted to stay at BCV and I thought with it being summer and SAB that I should try to rent as soon as possible. I started looking in early July 2011 and it took me about two weeks from start (finding a renter) to finish (paying via Paypal). I would start looking sooner than later. I'd recommend starting, or even having a renter lined up, about 11 months before you want to travel. We paid $11/point and I was very happy with that.

We rented through a broker and paid $13 per point. I felt better going with him for our first time renting points because he is so highly recommended. We have a reservation at BLT and knew we wanted to be there so we booked with him back in Jan or early Feb and our stay is in September.

I am at OKW on rented points at this very moment. I love the place, it is so nice and all the sleeping beds are comfortable. We have cooked at least one meal in a crock pot each day and have really saved money on food. It has been great. Our family usually stay at ASMu, but needed different accomendatons as we have my 82 year old mother with us. I responded on the point rental board and went thru an individual for $12 per point.

You are already only six months out. Your options may be limited because members book 7 to 11 months out. You may have to pay full payment once the reservation is made. Or you may only need to pay half and the rest shortly thereafter. Read the sticky threads at the top of the DVC Rent/Trade Board.

When my son was in kindergarten in Catholic School his teachers advised against missing school for a vacation. The pace is pretty quick and unless she comes in knowing a lot, she may wind up behind if she misses a week.

Thanks for everyone's replies. We have now decided to go for Christmas and New Years! And we don't have to rent points because I got a great rate using DH's place of work's discount at the Dolphin! Going for 9 nights 12/23-1/1 for less than $1800! Yay! Can't wait!
