Hi all!
First post and learning the ropes...
My sister is a DVC member and her family is skipping their Disney trip this year. She has offered to sell us her points (200 worth) for our family trip. We will need an additional 2days worth of points (72 or so) for our trip.
Is the only option to have her book the 2 addtional days needed as cash days?
OR
Am I able to rent 2days of points from another member via David's, the Rental Store, etc... and combine the 2 as 1 booking?
I hope that makes sense... sorry, just picking up on the lingo and details of this crazy thing we call Disney ;)

You cannot merge reservations which have been made by different members. The members could contact Member Services and ask that a note be entered on your reservations that you have a continuing stay so that you don’t need to move. But both members have to call to make that request.

Your sister could borrow points from her next year to complete the reservation if she has more points available.

She could get a transfer of points from another member if she is comfortable doing that. The entire stay would be under one reservation if she does that.

Or she can book the last two nights for cash, but again that would be separate from the points reservation. There’s a possibility that you would have to change rooms but she can requested that a continuing stay be noted on both reservations.

Thanks for the helpful reply Marionnette.
So... a few followup details/questions...
My sister does have more points on her account... but she said she was willing to sell us up to 200 of them... I believe the points above that are carry over, and for their trip following, she'll need to retain a certain point level...?

"She could get a transfer of points from another member if she is comfortable doing that. The entire stay would be under one reservation if she does that."
How would this work?
Where would I find someone to sell me the 72? points? Via the DVC Rent/Trade Forum?
And, you mention, if she is comfortable with that... what might make this process 'uncomfortable'?

Thanks again... I'm trying to hammer out some legwork and present to her the best route for us, without having her do all this extra work on our behalf... as we're super grateful for her 200 point offer already!

Even though your sister says that she is “selling” her points to you, that’s not how it works. She is selling you a reservation that she makes with her points. You will never own those points or have control of them. They are her points...always.

Following that logic, you cannot purchase points from another member. You, as a non-owner, cannot even arrange a transfer of points. Your sister would have to handle the transfer. Transferring involves one owner contacting Member Services thru a 3-way call with the receiving owner. Both owners provide DVC with their membership number and the owner who is transferring the points to your sister’s account tells MS how many points to transfer. Payment is arranged outside of DVC because it’s in the POA that money cannot be exchanged for points transfers.

Transfers require a bit of trust. A receiving owner could pay the other owner and not get their points. Or a transferring owner could transfer their points and then not get paid. DVC would not get involved with any disputes that arise from transfers agreements that go bad. Transfers are one-directional and cannot be undone. And owners get only one transfer (either in or out) per use year. For the most part, transferred points will not appear in an owner’s online account and require a phone call to MS to use them. They retain their use year expiration date and their home resort. If your sister’s home resort and the transferred points are from different home resorts, they cannot be combined to make a reservation until 7 months or less from the date of arrival.

You can find members willing to transfer on the Rent/Trade board,

The comfort is that usually a member wants payment in full for the transfer as it’s a final transaction, so you have to trust the person.

Is she gets the transfer, then she can book the reservation as one on her membership, but she would have to call as transferred points can’t be booked online,

If you rent the extra nights from a member, as mentioned, just be sure they a d your sister call MS to put the note with the other reservation number stating it’s the same group and to link them. Then at check in, mention it to make sure you are in the same room for both reservations

Super. Thanks again to you both for the inputs.
Definitely helps with direction and decision making.
Seems like I'll likely go the route of renting from another for the 2 days we need to fill our week gap, and have each call in... as the 2 cash days is about $500 more than renting the points! o_O
