Hello everyone! My wife and I have done Disney ALOT but we have just discovered that we can "rent/buy" DVC points for a vacation but we have some questions:

1. How does the process work?

2. Is it safe?

3. Have you ever done it/what was your experience?

Thanks!!!

1. DVC owners buy timeshare pts and can't use them. so they can book a stay with those pts and rent them to others.

you would not actually rent "pts" as you cannot do anything with the pts - member services would not even speak to you to discuss the reservation. (but you can check the website for wdw stays to make sure your reservation is there.)

the DVC owner still controls the reservation until you check in. you cannot call to make changes or add the dining plan or whatever without going through the owner.

the biggest issue is usually that the rental is FINAL and there are no refunds. an owner might try to work with you to change the dates but they don't have to so make sure your dates are FIRM.

2. usually.

there have been rare cases of fraud. but if you do your homework, you can minimize the risk.

and if you rent from david, he holds back some of the money in case the reservation is fraudulent, so there is some protection there. you can read more details about how renting works at his website:

https://www.dvcrequest.com/

3. i did it directly with a DVC owner here on the DIS. i didn't like worrying if the reservation might be canceled out from under me, but i found the owner with google and felt comfortable that it was real. but after that, i bought in so i could control my own reservations.

There is a much longer thread from the OP (lots more answers) on the DVC-Miscellaneous board.

We rented twice before buying into DVC ourselves. We didn't have any problems either time. However, now that places like David's Rental has become so popular, if I needed to rent a reservation now, I would use them. Even if you go through a rental broker, you will still need to be very sure of your vacation plans as chalee94 stated.

I would feel weird renting from an owner directly (even though I am one and considering renting bc I just bought too many points!). Maybe bc I lived in NYC for way too long and have been scammed a few times (17 yrs living in manhattan starting at age 17!).

The owner has little risk... But the renter faces a lot more risk bc they put money down upfront. There are two places that rent via a broker that I know of -David's and dvcrentalstore Both are legit.

I do think both places are short on points though so it's not guaranteed that you get a reservation even if you go through them. The smaller point reservations seem to get booked more quickly. Maybe do a split stay between two owners.

Good luck!

Hi, I can indicate where you can deal directly with an owner? The other question is whether the book you have to pay the full rent or you can pay up to days before check in?

there is a board on the DIS for this. there are other sites that you could google to find other DVC owners.

"days before check in" is unrealistic. most owners will require that you pay in full at least a month or 2 in advance to limit their risk in holding the reservation.
