I was wondering if the points up for rent have to be used at that resort or if you are renting them can arrangments be made to transfer to another resort or a Disneyland resort like the Grand Califrorian without extra charge?

It depends on where the owner is in their use year. If you are traveling less than 7 months after the reservation is made, they can be used at any DVC resort, but if you are making the reservation more than 7 months out, it has to be at the owner's resort. Now if you are talking about non-DVC resorts, you are better off booking those direct with Disney, since those are out of system trades for DVC, and will cost more than staying at a DVC resort.

Also, if they are renting a RESERVATION rather than just saying points available, they probably already have a confirmed reservation. Often those will be at sold out times of the year so it is a real plus to find one.

I believe they can be used at the Grand Californian right away. I don't think you need to wait for 7 months to use points for the Disney Collection.

That said, it MAY be a better deal to pay cash for the Grand Californian, especially if you are staying over the weekend. :smokin:

Thanks for the info, with regards to the Grand Californian the rates for me with taxes and a discount for having a DL annual pass ends up at just under $400 for a weeknight (Wed) in Dec. The points a night for the room are 24 during that timeframe so I could save about 100-150 or so depending on the price of the points. But I was just trying to see if this was possible since I am new to the scenario. Orgianlly I looked into a dvc but given my family lives in so cal it's quite a lot esp w/ dland 20 minutes away, but I them found out about renting points or reservations and this is by far a better deal in my circumstance.

The big caveat I see is the difference in cancellation policies. When DVCers book the disney collection, the points (I think) can not be returned. Whereas, if you book via Disney, you can always change/modify/cancel a reservation XX number of days before arrival.

If you book Grand Californian via renting points, it's highly likely that the trip will be non-refundable. I know I wouldn't want to bear that risk with my points.

Some good points and thanks for the feedback
Any other help would be appreciated also

I think you may have difficulty in finding an owner willing to rent you a ressie anywhere other than a DVC resort. If you are lucky enough to find one, expect the terms to be "all sales final, no refunds, no cancellation, etc."

The reason is the DVC cancellation policies referenced above. If your plans change, the owner would be stuck with points which could not be used at a DVC resort. That's a big mess for the owner, and not many will take that risk. I know I wouldn't.

I know and I completely understand their dilemma but I live 20 minutes from DL and the chances of me cancelling in very slim, I'm just trying to save a buck or two this way, but thanks for the insight
