Renting DVC points and how it all works

I apologize for posting a question that may have been asked a gazillion times. I have been reading all the sticky threads and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with information.

My husband and I were thinking of renting DVC points for a stay coming up in October for 3 nights.

Can anyone give me a really quick easy explanation of how it works? I think we have to pick what DVC resort we'd like to stay in, then read the Rent boards to see if anyone has any points for those days in that hotel, right? But what happens after that? How do we figure out how many points we need to rent?

Also, are there any DVC hotels that are on the monorail? Or can we stay in any hotel with points? Sorry, I'm just getting a little confused thinking about all of this.

Start by reading the sticky threads at the top of the DVC Rent/Trade board. Start with the "Read me first" thread because that explains how the renting process works. Then read the "Required Reading" threads because they explain how to submit and maintain a thread on the R/T board. If you have questions after that, come back here and ask.

Bay Lake Towers is on the monorail (the Contemporary) but I believe getting a reservation for there at this time will be difficult for this October.

You can use points to stay at Disney hotels, but you'll spend more money than if you just paid cash.

Otherwise you are looking at the DVC resorts. At this late date, you will very likely only be able to find availability for what is a very popular DVC time of year at OKW or SSR, but you could get lucky. You can check the point charts to find out how many points you need to rent - there is a link at the top of this forum.
