Renting car seats from car rental company?

Has anyone does this? We will need two car seats for when we rent a car for the last two days of our trip. Are the car seats reliable? Alot of people don't know that car seats have expiration dates and I wonder if the car rental companies know this as well. We are still debating on whether to bring our own car seats. We've got Britax seats which are rather large and would be alot to bring for just two days.

We used one from Hertz for our four year old. I don't think it was very old, of course we just needed a booster seat. It was probably newer than ours!

We rented one once about 7 yrs. ago. (sorry I forget which co. we rented from)
It looked like it was from the 80's and the straps were all twisted and sticky. Who knows if they've ever been involved in an accident too? Since that time I bought a car seat bag at Babies R us for $20 and just put it in the bag and check it in as luggage. no big deal and saves a lot of $. Also when ds7 when thru the "blankie" phase, we could fold up his blanket on the car seat and it didn't take up reg. luggage space.
