Renting an ECV when already there?

Does anyone have any experience with renting an ECV after they get to WDW, when they might suddenly need one? The situation is that I leave Sunday for WDW and my lower back/sciatica has decided to act up and become painful. In the past, I've managed fine with just my cane. However, on this trip, I'm not so sure if after a few days, I might need an ECV. I hate to spend the money to rent one in advance since chances are that I won't need one. But just in case, does anyone here have any experience with renting one "on the spot"?

If you just need one at the parks, you should not have too much trouble if you are able to get to the park early. That means before 10 AM.

As far as calling one of the offside companies, if you're calling while you were there, you may have to call around to several. But people have still been able to get one even though they did not reserve ahead of time.
You will have better luck at 89 busy time; I would definitely advise someone going during a busy time to arrange for it ahead of time.
